Match preview: Atlético vs. Rosenborg

Los Rojiblancos desperate for three points to kick-start their campaign

Atlético Madrid will be looking to finally get their Europa League campaign off the ground on Thursday as they welcome Norwegian side Rosenborg to the Vicente Caldéron.

Sitting at the bottom of Group B with only a single point from two games, the reigning champions go into the third round of matches needing three points, but know that a win could take them back into one of the two qualifying berths.

Rosenborg bounced back from a 4-0 hammering at Leverkusen in Round 1 to beat Aris 2-1 at home three weeks ago.

The Norwegians have won just once in eight visits to Spain though, and will be wary of an Atlético side back on track after dispatching Getafe 2-0 at the weekend.

Atlético are unbeaten in their last three home games though and hope to extend the run against a Rosenborg side who have only scored once in their last five European away games.

The stats might be on Atleti’s side but they will be without Domínguez as he continues his recovery from an ankle injury.

Superstar goalkeeper David De Gea did not train on Tuesday after picking up a thigh injury in training on Monday. The player himself is hopeful he will be able to play but Joel will be on standby in case he is needed between the sticks. Quique doesn’t seem too optimistic.

Surprisingly Álex Campos has been selected as third goalkeeper and will be on the bench tonight in case De Gea is unavailable, and not Atlético B-goalkeeper Iago.

Sergio Agüero is looking likely to return against Rosenborg, as he completes his recovery from injury. The Argentine, who will be making his first appearance in the Europa League since lifting the trophy in Hamburg last May, will be welcomed back into the Atleti side with open arms.

Diego Forlán has looked off-colour and started the Getafe match from the bench, which left us with only Diego Costa in reserve. Kun returned to training on Monday for the first time since injuring his leg and Quique Sánchez Flores will be hopeful that he has his talismanic young Argentine available to kick-start Atlético’s European campaign.

Diego Godín could also be set to return after picking up an injury in our win against Zaragoza last week. Godín was named in the squad to face Getafe but didn’t get off the bench.

Atlético match selection:
Goalkeepers: De Gea, Joel, Álex Campos
Defenders: Valera, Antonio López, Filipe, Godín, Ujfalusi, Perea
Midfielders: Mario Suárez, Tiago, Raúl García, Fran Mérida, Assunçao, Reyes, Simao
Forwards: Forlán, Sergio Agüero and Diego Costa.

Predicted line-up:

Ujfalusi – Perea – Godín – Filipe
Reyes – Tiago – Assunção – Simão
Agüero – Diego Costa

  • It would be really wrong to play with Tiago/Assuncao in the middle, even though its a very important game.

I would rather go with Raul Garcia and Mario, since they are more physical and I guess are faster and more aggresive and this will be an asset if we will play high with hard pressing put on Rosenborg, and this is what I believe we should do. What is more, they are waiting to get their minutes.

Let Raul wait, he has played plenty and shown little. I’d like to see Mario play though, give the young kid some burn.

  • Arjit

mario and camacho in the middle. raul garcia has had enough undeserved minutes

  • k14

why would any of you want to replace assuncao ?
he is by far the most physical, fit and fastest of them all.
He is the only center midfielder that is replaceable in this squad.

  • RojiBlanco

Raul Garcia played great in last seasons EL-run, but I would rather go with someone else. Who and idea. We HAVE to win this..aupa atleti.

  • I.A.

Well, i think nobody in Atleti is harder than Assunçao. Neither RG nor suarez can´t resist what he can. For me, assunçao must play all possible matches. No one but Tiago is a tactical player like him

  • RojiBlanco

    Definitely no De Gea.

Atlético de Madrid: Joel; Ujfalusi, Perea, Godín, Filipe Luis; Reyes, Assuncao, Raúl García, Simao; Forlán y Kun Agüero.

    If i’m not mistaken..

  • Ringo Schut

What would we do if we didn’t have Joel? =)

He’s no De Gea, but also very young and already very, very good!

  • Ringo Schut

Atlético: Joel; Valera, Ujfalusi, Godín, Filipe Luis; Assunçao, Tiago, Reyes, Simao; Forlán y Diego Costa.

Rosenborg: Orlund; Lustig, Bjarsmyr, Demidov, Dorsin; Henriksen, Annan, Skjelbred, Iversen; Prica, Moldskred.

  • I.A.

Reyes is really really awesome. My god, what a way to play football. Now, is our most important player; dribbling, speed, great vision of game and asociation…

  • Inside the Club

Are you serious about wanting Camacho and Suarez. We had to play our biggest match of the season and you want those muppets playing. Raul Garcia being great, He was ok and nothing more. But excellent point on Reyes but I.A. did you support the lad last year when he was being booed and written off. If you did fair play to you.

  • Nick Poskitt

Guys head to the match report for post-match discussion! 🙂

  • I.A.

Reyes has a grat actitude now. Last year he was being booed because his low efficiency at work, not for his madridista past. His quality hasn´t never denied by the fans but yes his actitude
