Goalkeeper Iago scores winning goal for Atlético B

Atlético Madrid B opened the second half of their Segunda División B season with a 3-2 win over Getafe B, and the winning goal came from the least likely source on the pitch: their own goalkeeper.

Twenty minutes from the end, with the score level at 2-2, Iago looked to start a counter-attack quickly after dealing with a Getafe corner. He struck the ball with such power that it carried the length of the pitch, bounced over his opposite number and dropped into the net. The goal settled a match the reserves had been on course to win comfortably at the interval.

Atlético had started brilliantly. Inside the first minute Regalón headed home from a Mínguez set piece, and by the seventh minute Collado had doubled the lead with another header, this time from a Noguera cross. Mínguez had a hand in almost every goal the side scored during that run of matches, with two assists for the captain in the previous three games alone.

Getafe grew into the match before the break, but Pico and Rudy both found Iago in their way. The second half turned quickly. Atlético’s defenders failed to clear on a wet pitch and Rudy pulled one back within two minutes of the restart; Alcalá equalised from a corner in the 64th minute, and the tie looked as though it could go either way, until the goalkeeper intervened at the other end.

The result was a useful one against opponents who had beaten the Atlético reserves 1-0 in the reverse fixture earlier in the season.
