Atlético line up Ferreira Carrasco as Arda replacement

Atlético move for Monaco youngster as Gaitán bid fails

In the hours that have passed since Barcelona confirmed the capture of Arda Turan, Atleti fans have been pondering who the club will bring in to replace the Turkish wizard.

For months, rumours have been speculating that Atlético had already narrowed down their options to fill Arda’s boots, if the Turk’s wish to leave was granted.

Now the move has been confirmed, some people do not expect any signings to be made as a direct replacement, instead choosing to place their trust in Óliver, or Ángel Correa.

According to the newspapers, Atlético have been focusing their attention on Nico Gaitán, the Argentinean midfielder currently at Benfica.

Gaitán only renewed his contract with the Portugese club in November 2014, increasing his buy-out clause to €35 million. A fee that Atleti are unwilling to meet – at least in cash.

Los Rojiblancos reportedly offered up Ángel Correa as a makeweight in order to get the deal done, but Benfica are holding out for the release clause to make the most of their asset.

“We’re 98 per cent sure Gaitán is leaving,” said the guys over at PlanetBenfica.co.uk. “We always sell a big name every summer, and it looks like it’s Nico’s time. Even though we want him to stay, of course.”

Reports in today’s Marca suggest that Atleti weren’t able to make a deal with Benfica, and the player looks destined to sign for Manchester United – also heavily linked.

Instead, Atlético attention has turned to their second-choice signing, Ferreira Carrasco of Monaco.

The Belgian youngster joined Monaco as a 17-year-old from Genk in 2010, and scored eight goals last season for Monaco.

Atleti have started negotiations with the Ligue 1 club, and Luis Campo, Monaco’s sporting director, hasn’t ruled out a move.

“For now, he is our player, and he will begin the pre-season with us,” he said in Marca. “But you’ll see – you never know.”

What do you think of the prospect of signing Ferreira Carrasco? Would you prefer Gaitán? What do you make of us supposedly offering up Ángel Correa?

He is a better option than Gaitan IMHO (who is too expensive and does not have a EU passport), but I have this small hope that after selling Arda we are actually in position to try to bring in Reus 😀

And if this is impossible its better to spend part of those 30 mln on world class DM like Schneiderlin, Gundogan or super promising Tielemans.

  • ATLETI

yes, i hope we sign him.. i want him a lot

  • power house

will be a good deal for atletico.. gaitan is good but too expensive.. atletico should look for DM and a right wing player

I’d say Felipe Anderson would be a better option than both.
Also, we’d need a midfielder like Xhaka or Geis beside Koke.

    what about this

  • Paweł Kosiński

Man, stop reading that wacko Juan Gato 😉

  • Gert

Someone at work is his personal friend. Right now, there’s a +/- 70% chance he could make the move to the beloved Vicente Calderon.

  • Boba Fett

    Guys, chill, we have Correa.
Who cares about Arda anymore ???

  • We desperately need to keep up our stock of Belgians – especially if Toby is leaving!

  • starvs

We need to reinforce midfield before replacing Arda directly, already have Oli and Correa for that. Because Oli and Correa are young Arda’s direct replacement should have more experience. Nolito seems like good mix of quality, value, and experience.

  • Offering up Ángel Correa? I don’t why we would do that. He seems to be magic on the field while playing in Argentina. We have plenty of replacements for Arda, and should not be running scared into signing for a player that we don’t need. Oliver Torres is also coming back too. The question I have is, what positions “really” need to be filled?

  • Paweł Kosiński

Geis has recently signed for Schalke 04.

  • atleti10

    Haha

  • atleti10

I agree, I really want us to sign Kranevitter. He has never failed to impress me.

Anyway Im not a fan of Carrasco. Fekir is simply a better version of him, we should be after him.

  • Ahmad Hossainy

Callegeon ?! .. do you mean Callejon ?!

An Atleti with Callejon and without Gabi !
That won’t be Atleti, but a disfigured freak

  • Paweł Kosiński

Gabi’s form of 2014/15 doesn’t help him getting into the first XI. Tiago was way more solid.

  • Ahmad Hossainy

That is not the point, I’m not concerned about Gabi’s “relatively” bad form last season -although I’m very sure he will get his good form back this season, especially when he gets acquitted from the fixing case- I am concerned about what I read from many Atleti fans, especially in this website, who want to let go of our true Rojiblancos, our heroes, our leaders such as Gabi & Raul Garcia, who still have a lot to give us, and not just passion and enthusiasm, but football too, and in the same time, those fans seem very excited about a Madridista like Callejon

Seriously, am I the only one who is shocked to see a suggested XI for Atleti this season with Callejon and without Gabi, and on an Atletico fans website ?!!

  • Ringo can get it

I’d only get a Callejon type player as a back-up. My biggest issue is that Atleti can get someone better for the wings/offensive midfield. We even have those players available already!

Correa and Oli over Callejon any day for me.

Speaking of Correa, I hope they didn’t offer him. As a loan deal… okay… but offering his permanent signing would be ridiculous. I want him in our first 18 players next season, though, competing with Raúl, Oli and some bought winger guy who’s hopefully better than Callejon for the two spots between midfield and attack. (and Saúl, although he might be CM)
