Why this page carries a date and the others do not

The reference pages here, the honours list, the club history and the legends gallery, deal in settled record. A trophy won in 1962 will still have been won in 1962 next year.

A squad is the opposite. It changes at every transfer window, and a page that says “current squad” without a date is making a claim it cannot keep. So the list below is stamped, the transfer tables give the exact dates money and players moved, and nothing here is described as current without that qualification attached.

That is the same standard the about page sets for the rest of the site: the reason this site avoids live scores, market values and injury news is that a reference which quietly goes stale is worse than none. A dated squad list is the one place where the information is worth carrying anyway, because it is what most people arriving at a club’s site are looking for.

The manager

Diego Simeone remains in charge, as he has been since 23 December 2011. That is the longest managerial tenure in the club’s history by a wide margin, covering two league titles, two Champions League finals, a Europa League, a Super Cup and a Copa del Rey.

What changed in the summer of 2026

The most consequential departure was not a signing story. Antoine Griezmann left on a free transfer on 30 June 2026, at thirty-five, joining Orlando City.

He leaves as the club’s all-time leading goalscorer on 212 in 501 appearances, a record set across two spells, 2014 to 2019 and 2021 to 2026, and one that no player from the club’s first hundred and twenty years approached. His profile covers the whole of it.

Thiago Almada’s move to River Plate on 8 August, for a reported €20 million, was the largest outgoing fee of the window. Clément Lenglet went to Benfica on loan and Nico González returned to Juventus at the end of his.

The incoming business was heavier. Morten Hjulmand arrived from Sporting CP for a reported €40 million on 11 July and Lee Kang-in from Paris Saint-Germain for €35 million on 25 July: two midfielders, two of the three largest fees of the summer. Álex Grimaldo came from Bayer Leverkusen for €20 million on 30 June, with Thomas Lemar and Carlos Martín arriving on free transfers the same day.

Reading the squad list

Twenty-eight names, drawn from thirteen countries, with Spain supplying roughly half.

Two of them have full profiles on this site: Jan Oblak, in his twelfth season at the club, and Koke, the club’s record appearance maker and the only remaining member of the squad who was there before Simeone was appointed. Both are linked from the table.

The rest are recorded here as the club’s own season register gives them, by number, position, nationality and name, without the biographical detail the legends gallery carries, because that detail belongs to careers that are finished or long enough to summarise. Writing a career retrospective for a twenty-year-old with a handful of appearances would mean inventing the parts that are not yet there.

One entry has no shirt number attached in the register, which is normal for a player registered after the numbers were assigned and is left as it appears rather than guessed at.

What this page will not tell you

Contract lengths, market values, injury status, expected line-ups and transfer rumours are all absent, and deliberately.

Each of those changes faster than a static page can follow, and each is the kind of figure that is widely reported and rarely sourced.
