Koke has played more matches for Atlético Madrid than anyone in the club’s history: 740 and counting, all for the same club, having joined the academy and never left.

That single fact does more work than any other on this page. A record spanning a hundred and twenty years of a club’s existence, held by a player still playing, at a club that has spent much of its modern history selling its best assets.

Everything the modern club has won

The honours list attached to his name is effectively the honours list of the Simeone era, because he has been in the side for all of it.

Two league titles, in 2013–14 and 2020–21. Two Europa Leagues, in 2012 and 2018. Two UEFA Super Cups, in 2012 and 2018. The 2013 Copa del Rey against Real Madrid at the Bernabéu, and the 2014 Supercopa.

Eight major honours. No other player in the club’s history has been present for more of what Atlético have won, because no era has produced this much and no player has been present for all of one.

The two finals

He was also on the pitch for both Champions League final defeats, Lisbon in 2014 and Milan in 2016, both against Real Madrid and covered together on the three-finals page.

A career that contains every trophy the modern club has lifted also contains its two worst nights, and the same player was central to all of them. That is what a twenty-year tenure at one club actually means: the whole ledger, not the highlights.

The assist, not the goal

Fifty goals in 740 appearances is a low return for a midfielder of his standing, and it is the wrong measure to apply. Koke’s function in Simeone’s sides has been the pass before the pass and the positional discipline that lets a 4-4-2 hold its shape for ninety minutes, the structure the tactics page sets out in full.

The one goal-adjacent contribution most supporters can name is not his own strike. On 21 May 2017 he set up Fernando Torres for the second of the two goals that closed the Vicente Calderón, three minutes after Griezmann had made the first.

A career at one club

Players who spend an entire career at a single club are rare anywhere and rarer at clubs of Atlético’s size, which sold Torres in 2007, Agüero in 2011, Falcao in 2013 and Griezmann in 2019 before he came back.

Koke has been the constant through all of those departures. He debuted at a club that had won one trophy in fourteen years and has since collected eight of his own, and the legends gallery shows his span running longer than any other name on it.

What 740 appearances actually requires

The number is not only a measure of quality. It requires availability across sixteen seasons, a manager who wants the same profile of midfielder for the whole of that time, and a club willing to keep a homegrown player rather than convert him into a fee.

All three held. Diego Simeone has been in charge since December 2011, which covers almost the whole of Koke’s senior career, and the tactical role, the pass before the pass and the shape held for ninety minutes, did not change enough to make him replaceable.

Against him the club sold Torres, Agüero, Falcao and, briefly, Griezmann. The records page lists the appearance table; Adelardo’s 553, made between 1959 and 1976, was the mark that stood before him.

The medal the record does not include

Eight major honours, and none of them from Europe’s principal competition. Koke played in both Champions League finals, Lisbon in 2014 and Milan in 2016, both against Real Madrid and both lost, and the three-finals page records that the club has never won it.

A career of 740 appearances at one club, containing every trophy that club has lifted in the modern era, still has that gap in it. The 2027 final is scheduled for Atlético’s own stadium, which the Metropolitano page notes was announced in September 2025.
