A European Cup winner, signed into a drought

Paulo Futre joined Atlético Madrid having just won the European Cup with Porto. He arrived at a club that had last been champions of Spain in 1976–77 and would not be again until 1995–96, in the middle of the longest title drought in its history.

Two hundred and thirteen appearances and fifty-one goals across two spells, and almost none of it produced silverware. That is the era in one player, and the period page says the same thing at greater length.

The Gil years

Jesús Gil became president in 1987, and Futre’s signing was the clearest early statement of what that presidency intended: a national figure at the top of the club and a marquee player on the pitch, in a period when the league table offered nothing to point at.

The strategy produced two Copas del Rey, won back to back in 1990–91 and 1991–92, and no championship. The cup record shows how often that competition has carried Atlético’s trophy cabinet in decades when the league would not.

What supporters actually got

Reading this era through the honours list gets it wrong, and the point is worth making plainly.

A winger of Futre’s standing, at his peak, in a side that finished league runners-up once in nine seasons, meant that the reason to attend was the player rather than the position. Supporters of clubs that win regularly rarely have to make that distinction. Atlético’s did, for most of a decade, and it shaped how the club talks about itself.

The legends gallery contains several names in the same category. Abel Resino, the goalkeeper whose 303 appearances cover almost exactly the same years, is another, and none of them has a league medal from the period.

The second spell

He returned briefly in 1997–98, after the Double had come and gone without him. By then the club had won the league and cup in a single season under Radomir Antić, and was two seasons away from relegation.

The two-spell shape puts him alongside Fernando Torres and Antoine Griezmann as players who left and came back, though unlike them, Futre’s second spell added nothing to the medal count.

Why he is in the gallery

Because the alternative reading of the club’s history, the one where only trophies count, would leave the years between 1977 and 1996 as a blank, and they were not blank to the people who were there.

Fifty-one goals from a winger, two cups, and nine seasons of being the most watchable thing at a club that could not win the league. The era page calls that a trade-off supporters of this club recognise more readily than most.

Two spells, two different clubs

The 1986 arrival and the 1997 return bracket the strangest decade in Atlético’s modern history.

He left a club that had not won the league in sixteen years. He came back to one that had won the Double in 1995–96 without him and would be relegated in 1999–2000, the sequence the era page treats as the defining oddity of the club’s record.

Fifty-one goals from a winger across 213 appearances is a respectable return in any era. In this one it came almost entirely without medals, which is why the legends gallery has to be read as something other than a list of players who won things.

Where the era’s players ended up in the gallery

Three names in the legends gallery belong mainly to the years between the 1977 and 1996 championships: Futre, Abel Resino and, at its far end, Kiko, who arrived in 1993 and was still there for the Double.

Only Kiko has a league medal, and he collected it after the era closed. That distribution is the clearest statement the gallery makes about the period: it holds players from it, and almost no silverware.
