Twenty Copa del Rey finals, ten won and ten lost. No competition in the club’s history has given Atletico Madrid a more evenly balanced record, and none has produced a more consequential single afternoon.

The Ten Wins

They arrive in a distinctive pattern: three separate pairs of consecutive victories, and four standalone wins.

The first pair opened the account, in 1959–60 and 1960–61. Single wins followed in 1964–65, 1971–72 and 1975–76, three cups in twelve seasons, running alongside the club’s strongest league period.

The 1984–85 win came in the same year as the club’s first Supercopa de España. Then the second pair: 1990–91 and 1991–92, both in the early years of the Jesús Gil presidency, at a time when the league title stayed out of reach.

The ninth came in 1995–96, the second half of the only Double in the club’s history, with Barcelona beaten 1–0 after extra time in Zaragoza, in the same season the league was won under Radomir Antić.

The tenth, and most recent, came in 2012–13.

The 2013 Final

Atletico beat Real Madrid 2–1 after extra time, and the match was played in Madrid at the Bernabéu.

The details matter for what came after rather than for the trophy. Simeone had taken over in December 2011 with the team tenth in La Liga. Eighteen months later they won a final against Real Madrid, in Real Madrid’s stadium, having not beaten them in any competition for a very long time. The Ten Finals They Lost

Runner-up finishes came in 1920–21, 1925–26, 1955–56, 1963–64, 1974–75, 1986–87, 1998–99, 1999–2000, 2009–10 and 2025–26.

Two of those deserve their own line. The 1999–2000 final was lost in the same season the club was relegated from La Liga: a cup final and a demotion in the same spring, which is a combination few clubs manage. And the most recent, 2025–26, is the twentieth final in the club’s history: the win-loss ledger in this competition now sits exactly level.

Why the Balance Is Unusual

Ten wins from twenty finals is close to the least flattering way a knockout record can settle, because it removes every excuse. A club that loses most of its finals can point to the opposition; a club that wins most can point to a method. Atletico’s Copa record does neither. It simply records that the club has reached the final of the Spanish cup twenty times across a hundred and five years and split them down the middle.
