Seventeen seasons

Adelardo Rodríguez played for Atlético Madrid from 1959 to 1976 and made 553 appearances, more than any other player in the club’s legends gallery except Koke, who passed him more than four decades later.

Seventeen consecutive seasons at one club is unusual in any era. In this case it also happens to coincide almost exactly with the most decorated stretch in Atlético’s history, which is why his honours list is longer than anyone else’s on this site.

What he was there for

Three league championships: 1965–66, 1969–70 and 1972–73. Five Copas del Rey: 1959–60, 1960–61, 1964–65, 1971–72 and 1975–76. The 1962 European Cup Winners’ Cup, the club’s first European trophy. And the 1974 Intercontinental Cup.

Ten major honours. For comparison, Koke, the most decorated player of the modern club and present for everything Diego Simeone has won, has eight.

Two grounds, two eras

He arrived at the old Metropolitano, which had been Atlético’s home since 1923, and he was in the side that won the 1965–66 league title there in its final season.

That autumn the club moved to the Vicente Calderón, and Adelardo played another ten seasons at the new ground. Very few players in the club’s history bridge a stadium change; he is the clearest of them, and his career effectively spans the two eras the club history treats separately.

1974

He was in the squad for the European Cup final against Bayern Munich in Brussels, the 1–1 draw in which Luis Aragonés scored in extra time and Georg Schwarzenbeck equalised in the final minute, followed by a 4–0 defeat in the replay.

The consolation came months later. Bayern declined the Intercontinental Cup because of fixture congestion, so Atlético took the place of European champions, lost 1–0 away to Independiente and won the return 2–0 in Madrid. The three-finals page covers both halves of that year.

The record that stood

553 appearances is the kind of number that only accumulates through availability. It requires seventeen seasons without a transfer, a serious loss of form, or a career-ending injury, at a club that changed manager, stadium and generation around him.

For decades it was the mark every long-serving Atlético player was measured against. Jan Oblak has 538 and is still adding; Antoine Griezmann finished on 501 across two spells. Koke passed it, and only Koke.

Why the name is less known than the record

Adelardo was a midfielder in an era before television made individual reputations portable, at a club whose greatest decade is remembered mostly for one night in Brussels that went wrong.

The era page makes the point in numbers: between 1965–66 and 1976–77 Atlético won four league championships and two cups, and in the whole of the rest of their history there are seven other titles across ninety years. Adelardo was in the side for three of the four, and for five cups either side of them.

Ten honours, and how rare that is

Ten major trophies at one club is a figure almost nobody in Atlético’s history approaches.

Koke has eight from the entire Simeone era. Diego Godín has seven from nine seasons in the same period. José Eulogio Gárate, Adelardo’s contemporary and the other constant of the golden decade, has six.

The explanation is length rather than superiority: seventeen seasons that happen to overlap with the club’s most productive stretch produce a medal count that a shorter career in the same era cannot. The honours list shows how unevenly Atlético’s trophies are distributed across the decades, and Adelardo’s span covers the densest part of it.

The number in context

Seventeen seasons at one club, in an era before squad rotation, means playing through the injuries, the managerial changes and the generational turnover that end most careers early. The 553 is as much a record of durability as of selection.
