The captain of the golden years
If one player embodies the Simeone era, it is Gabriel Fernández Arenas. Gabi wore the armband through the most successful stretch in modern Atlético Madrid history, and he did it as a Madrid-born academy graduate who had once been sold by the club he ended up defining.
His first spell told a familiar cantera story. He made his league debut in 2004, spent a season on loan at Getafe, and worked his way into the first team without ever quite convincing the decision-makers he was indispensable. In 2007 Atlético sold him to Real Zaragoza. He lived a full career in miniature there: relegation in 2008, promotion in 2009, the captaincy at La Romareda, and a growing reputation as an organiser who made everyone around him play better.
Atlético brought him back in the summer of 2011 for a modest fee. Six months later Diego Simeone arrived, and the two turned out to be made for each other.
Armband, title, and a goal in Lyon
Gabi became club captain in 2012 and ran Simeone’s midfield with a control that never showed up in highlight reels. He set the pressing triggers, managed referees, slowed games down and sped them up. In the 2011–12 Europa League he anchored the run to Bucharest, where Athletic Club were beaten 3-0. The 2012 UEFA Super Cup and the 2012–13 Copa del Rey, won 2-1 against Real Madrid at the Bernabéu, followed.
Then came 2013–14. Gabi captained Atlético through a 38-game league season that ended with the 1-1 draw at Camp Nou, Godín’s header securing a first championship since 1996 against a Barcelona side that had to win. He lifted the trophy as captain days after leading the team out in the Champions League final in Lisbon. A second Champions League final followed in Milan in 2016. Both were lost to Real Madrid, and both hurt in ways the club history records honestly.

Supporters did not love Gabi for his numbers. They loved him because he was theirs: a local boy, sold and reclaimed, who treated the armband as a job description rather than an honour. Remarkably, he was never capped by Spain at senior level, not even while captaining the champions of La Liga. Around the Calderón that omission was worn almost as a badge, further proof that Gabi belonged to Atlético and nobody else. The captaincy itself ran from Diego Simeone’s first months in charge through to the night in Lyon, which makes him the constant of the most successful stretch in the club’s modern history: he played in every final Atlético won between 2012 and 2018.
