Keko loaned out to Cartagena

A one year agreement has been reached with the second division side

Marca reports that Atlético B winger Sergio Gontán, better known as Keko, has been loaned out for one year to second division side FC Cartagena.

The 18-year old returned to Atleti this summer after spending the second half of last season on loan at Valladolid. The youth international captained Spain’s U19 team to a second place finish in the European Championships in July, where he received some glowing praise from sections of the media.

This news is surprising considering midfielder José Manuel Jurado’s exit to Schalke, as Keko was seen by many as a possible replacement for the Andalusian.

I think this deal had been agreed a while ago, but Atlético and Keko were probably hoping for a la Liga club. Last season we were able to track Keko when he featured quite often for Valladolid, that will be a bit harder to do now that he’ll play for Cartagena. Let’s hope he earns a spot in the first eleven over there to gain plenty of experience!

He better get a lot of playing time, if he doesn’t start on second division team then he should not have been loaned there.

Apparently Royston Drenthe has been loaned to Hércules. They would have been better off with Keko.
