In accordance with its “Continuity Project”, Atlético has confirmed on its official website that agreements have been reached with Assunção, Reyes and Ujfalusi to extend their stays in Madrid. Reyes has signed for three more seasons, whilst his team-mates Assunção and Ujfalusi have agreed to remain with the club for at least two more years.
Atlético Madrid are still without a win in this season’s Europa League after a 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen at the Vicente Calderón on Thursday night. Los Rojiblancos can have no complaints about the result after a very poor first half display.
A Simão goal in the 19th minute seemed enough for Atleti to leave Valencia with three points, but a late equaliser by Aduriz ruined Quique’s return to the Mestalla. The coach will have been happy with his team’s performance in the first half and the solid defending for most of the game, but will be worried about the lack of creativity going forward.
Atlético began their league campaign on Monday evening with a spectacular 4-0 win over Sporting Gijón. Jurado, Forlán and Simão took care of the goals with some brilliant finishing, while Kun Agüero and José Antonio Reyes were unstoppable the entire night. David de Gea and Álvaro Domínguez have been selected to play for Spain U21, while Fran Mérida has been dropped. Tiago will be playing with Portugal as they start their qualification campaign for the European Championships in 2012, and Sergio Agüero has been called up for a friendly against Spain.
