After a week of intense pre-season training, Diego Simeone and his men played the very first match of the new campaign. On Saturday night Atlético, with an elite starting line-up, beat Gimnástica Segoviana 2-1 with goals by Raúl García and Diego Godín. Normally teams will use the first few friendly matches of the pre-season to
Atlético beat Recreativo on Thursday night and collected the Trofeo Colombino for the 6th time. Hosts Recre scored midway through the second half, but goals by Adrián and Eduardo Salvio handed the Colchoneros the win in Huelva. Atleti’s next match will be the first leg of the Europa League play-off against Vitória on Thursday.
Atletico has had quite a turbulent offseason. After the squad got together on the 4th of July, Gregorio Manzano has been working hard to ensure that the team is ready for the first La Liga game on the 21st of August against Real Sociedad. Tom Pollock takes a look at the good and the bad of los Rojiblancos’ pretemporada so far, and describes what we can expect between now and the start of the season.
A week before the Europa League qualifier against Stromsgodset, Atleti played two short friendly games but failed to impress. On Thursday night we lost both of our mini-matches against Granada and Besiktas by the same slim margin of 1-0. With seven days to go before our first official match of the season, coach Manzano still has a lot to worry about.
On Thursday night, Atlético will not just take part in one, but two friendlies. We have been invited to a mini-tournament in Granada where we’ll play one half against the hosts and one against Besiktas. At 21:00 CET Atleti kicks off the night against the Turkish side, where we will meet an old friend. Not only does one of our favourite opposing players, Guti, play for the team in black and white, but we also rendezvous with Simão.
Last season we beat Alcalá 8-2 in a pre-season friendly, this time the Segunda División B outfit only shipped one as Atleti came away with a 0-1 win. Atlético’s new defender Miranda, who only joined training two days ago, made his first appearances for the rojiblancos. Álvaro Domínguez, Mario Suárez and Eduardo Salvio also featured for the first time this pre-season.
After the 19-1 thrashing of CD Arcángel, Atleti also won their second friendly of the pre-season. In La Albuera, we beat Segunda División B side Gimnástica with four goals in each half. Gregorio Manzano again started in a 4-4-2 formation, which consisted mostly of canteranos.
Atleti’s first friendly match of the new season was hardly a test. In Los Ángeles de San Rafael we beat local amateur team CD Arcángel by 19 goals to 1. The goals were scored by Collado (4), Diego Costa, Pedro (both 3), Reyes, Filipe, Saúl (all 2), Koke, Fran Mérida and Gabi.
Atlético players are due back at the club on Monday the 4th of July, where they will undergo medicals before hitting the practice field, Atleti’s official site reports. There will be two training sessions per day right from the start along with group strength-building exercises, as Gregorio Manzano whips his team into shape ahead of the Europa League qualifiers at the end of the month.
Atlético starts the new season with physical tests on July 4th before our traditional pre-season training sessions at Los Ángeles de San Rafael. New Atlético coach Gregorio Manzano unfortunately won’t have all players at his disposal with Agüero, Elias, Forlán, Godín and Perea all in action at the Copa América. The South American championships end on the 24th of July. Borja will also be unavailable.
