Following Thursday morning’s practice session, Atleti’s four captains appointed for the current campaign, Antonio López, Luis Perea, Álvaro Domínguez and Gabi, sat down for a press conference which took place on Atlético C’s match field at the Majadahonda training facilities.
Saturday evening, in what was his 204th league appearance with Atlético, Luis Amaranto Perea perfectly typified his club of seven seasons. For most of the night, the Colombian centre-back put his positive attributes on display and looked Champions League worthy while, once or twice, succumbing to a lapse of concentration that could have ended up costing los Colchoneros dearly.
Atlético continued their steady climb up the Primera División ladder on Sunday with an all-around dominant showing over freefalling visitors Real Sociedad. The lively 3-0 victory was los Colchoneros’ second win in a row, and they now trail 5th place by a single point ahead of next weekend’s clash against Espanyol.
Pamplona’s world-famous ‘Running of the Bulls’ event got off to an early start this year when Atlético striker Diego Costa was unleashed from his corral on Sunday evening. A surreal performance by the much-maligned Brazilian forward drove Atleti supporters to the brink of madness as they watched, in utter disbelief, how he coolly slotted in three successive goals to lead his squad to a huge 3-2 victory over Osasuna.
Diego Forlán has had little rest this international break, playing the full 90 minutes in both games for Uruguay against Estonia and the Republic of Ireland. Luis Perea had to come on and play for Colombia, whilst David de Gea and Álvaro Domínguez also played the full 90 minutes for Spain U21s.
MARCA is reporting that Atlético will part ways with Portugese midfielder Tiago at the end of the season. On loan from Juventus since January 2010, the former Chelsea man has reportedly failed to impress and no effort will be made to retain him. According to other news sources, Raul Garcia and Antonio Lopez are set to follow Tiago out of the club.
Luis Amaranto Perea has extended his contract with Atlético and will continue playing for los Rojiblancos until June 2012. The Colombian’s contract was set to end at the end of this season, but club president Enrique Cerezo will hand him his new deal during an official presentation on Monday.
