Mérida loaned out to Braga

SC Braga have confirmed on their official website that they have signed Atlético midfielder Fran Mérida on loan for one year. “Fran Mérida will play at SC Braga this season,” reads the Portuguese side’s announcement before boldly claiming Fran “is one of the most promising players in Spanish football.”

Álvaro Domínguez was one of the three big surprises in Vicente del Bosque’s selection for Spain’s upcoming games against Chile and Liechenstein. Many of Atlético’s other players were called up by their respective national teams for the next round of international matches.

Pablo Forlán: “My son will not be staying at Atlético”

“It’s for sure that my son will not be staying at Atlético,” assured Pablo Forlán, father of striker Diego Forlán, to Uruguayan radio station 1410 AM Libre on Friday. “If Diego doesn’t go to Inter, he’ll go to another club,” he said. “I don’t know which one, but what’s for sure is that he will not be staying at Atlético.”

The return of ‘Uruguayo’

La Celeste proclaimed themselves champions of South America for a record 15th time in the history of the Copa América. After comfortably seeing off Peru in the continental tournament’s semi-finals by a score of 2-0 last Tuesday, Uruguay crushed Paraguay 3-0 in the competition’s final in Buenos Aires on Sunday. Atlético Madrid’s Diego Forlán struck twice in his national team’s victory.

Atléticos in America (Quarter-finals edition)

In a wacky and totally unexpected turn of events, all four favourites of the Copa América quarter-final round were shown the door, with the elimination of Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Colombia over weekend. Atlético players Luis Perea, Elias and Sergio Aguero were sent home packing, while Uruguayan duo Diego Forlán and Diego Godín will remain in Argentina for at least another week.

Decision time for Forlán

While Atlético confirmed winger José Antonio Reyes rejected Galatasaray’s offer for him on Tuesday, the club did not address the status of the Turkish outfit’s bid for striker Diego Forlán. Atleti have reportedly set Forlán’s price at €8m, a fee Galatasaray are willing to meet. The Istanbul-based club would also pay the Uruguayan €6m per year for three years.

Official: Reyes rejects Galatasaray

Atlético Madrid has confirmed that José Antonio Reyes has rejected a move to Galatasaray and will be staying at the Vicente Calderón next season. In a statement released on the club’s official website, Atlético confirmed that Galatasaray had made a bid for Reyes, Diego Forlán and Tomas Ujfalusi.
