If Atlético are to win a European trophy this season, they again have to defeat a team managed by Jose Mourinho, this time in the form of English Premier League side Chelsea. The UEFA Champions League semi-final draw was made today in Nyon, and means that an all-Madrid final is still on the cards in Lisbon, after our arch rivals Real were drawn against defending champions Bayern Munich.
Europa League holders Atlético Madrid have been drawn in the same group as Bayer Leverkusen, Rosenborg and Aris Thessaloniki in the group stages of this season’s Europa League. It could have been a lot tougher for Atlético as we looked certain to be drawn with big-spenders Manchester City as they could only be placed in Groups A, B or C. Luckily they were drawn into Group A against Juventus, in perhaps the tie of the round.
While all of the attention today will be on our UEFA Super Cup final in Monaco against Inter, there’s one more formality to get out of the way first. The draw for the Europa League will decide which of the 47 teams Atlético will be playing over the coming months in order to progress to the knockout stages. It takes place today, at 12:00 GMT+1 at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco.
