As long as Diego keeps the peace with Gregorio Manzano and continues to develop chemistry with the rest of the squad, there’s real reason to believe that los Rojiblancos have finally found their conductor.
On Friday and Tuesday, qualifying matches were played all over Europe for the upcoming European Championship in 2012. Several Atlético players were called up for their national selection, but most didn’t play any part; Arda Turan, played two.
Atlético have named four captains for the current season. Antonio López will continue to serve as the club’s top skipper, while Luis Perea, Álvaro Domínguez and Gabi were appointed as vice-captains. With three canteranos and Atleti’s longest serving foreigner, we’re certain the armband will be in good care.
Álvaro Domínguez was one of the three big surprises in Vicente del Bosque’s selection for Spain’s upcoming games against Chile and Liechenstein. Many of Atlético’s other players were called up by their respective national teams for the next round of international matches.
David de Gea and Álvaro Domínguez won the European U21 Championships after beating Switzerland 2-0 in the final on Saturday night. Adrián López, who is expected to join Atlético soon, won the Golden Boot as top-scorer of the tournament with 5 goals, and was also named as the tournament’s ‘Golden Player’.
Spain U19 have qualified for the Under-19 European Championship to be played in Romania next month. In the final qualifying round they topped a group with Switzerland, Montenegro and England. Also keep track of our South American stars who take part in the Copa America!
It was at home. It was Quique Sanchez Flores’ last match at the Vicente Calderón. It was against an already relegated and severely banged-up Hércules side. But…it wasn’t easy. In the end, a spectacular volley by Jose Antonio Reyes sealed Atlético’s spot in next season’s edition of the Europa League–los Rojiblancos’ fifth consecutive qualification for UEFA club competition.
Quqiue Sanchez Flores’ last home game as manager of Atlético Madrid resulted in a 2-1 win over Hércules on Sunday evening. Goals from Álvaro Domínguez and the outstanding José Antonio Reyes earned all three points for los Colchoneros as they exacted revenge on the side that had humiliated them earlier this season.
Sergio Agüero, Diego Forlán and Tomas Ujfalusi all set up accounts prior to the start of the season, mostly to communicate with their fans and post pictures as they’re en route to away games. But since Juanfran’s arrival, Twitter has become the perfect place for supporters to listen in to conversations between Atlético players.
Diego Forlán has had little rest this international break, playing the full 90 minutes in both games for Uruguay against Estonia and the Republic of Ireland. Luis Perea had to come on and play for Colombia, whilst David de Gea and Álvaro Domínguez also played the full 90 minutes for Spain U21s.
