Saúl and Giménez celebrate against Eibar

Saúl and Giménez taking lead roles for youthful Atleti

When Atlético Madrid beat Eibar 3-1 this past Saturday, they did so with the average age in the starting XI being roughly 23 years-old.

Although Fernando Torres’ 100th career goal stole the headlines on the day, the game solidified the fact that José Giménez and Saúl Ñíguez are showing fans of los Rojiblancos that the future’s looking bright.

Léo writhes in pain (AS)

Sprain season, this time Baptistão

Léo Baptistão had to be carried off the pitch at Atleti’s training facilities on a stretcher this Wednesday, as he badly injured his ankle during the training session while attempting to dribble youth talent goalkeeper Bono. Because of how badly the player seemed to be hurt, x-ray scans were taken immediately to rule out a more serious injury. The final diagnosis: a second degree ankle sprain.

Godín to be sold off in January? (

European giants reportedly after Godín

According to Spanish paper AS, Atlético central defender Diego Godín is on both Juventus’ and Chelsea’s wish lists for the upcoming winter transfer window. Little rest for Atléticos during international break

Diego Forlán has had little rest this international break, playing the full 90 minutes in both games for Uruguay against Estonia and the Republic of Ireland. Luis Perea had to come on and play for Colombia, whilst David de Gea and Álvaro Domínguez also played the full 90 minutes for Spain U21s.

Turan rumour hints at Salvio exit

If today’s reports of a deal for Turkish midfielder Arda Turan have any basis in fact, they may be an indicator of what Atleti plans to do with Eduardo Salvio, another promising young talent, currently on loan at Benfica. Given los Rojiblancos’ non-EU passport situation and Turan’s reported fee of €12m, it appears as if Atlético’s front office might be banking on a Salvio sale.

Match preview: Atlético vs. Villarreal

Atlético and Villarreal meet at the Calderón late Saturday evening in what promises to be a cracker. An average of over four goals per match has been scored the last seven times the teams have squared off. Atleti will look to get back on the winning track at home against a side that has beaten them three straight times.

Atletico defender Diego Godin injured with appendicitis

Godín out for a month due to appendicitis

Rojiblancos woke up to some very devastating news this morning, that of Diego Godín’s emergency appendectomy that will keep the Uruguayan out of the lineup for at least three to four weeks. The defender will miss out on the Madrid Derby at the Bernabeu next weekend, among other games.

Domínguez sprains ankle in U-21 match

In yet another devastating injury blow to Atlético, defender Álvaro Domínguez suffered a Grade II or III left ankle sprain in the dying minutes of yesterday’s U-21 clash between Spain and Croatia. The centre-back has been ruled out of our Liga match against Getafe on Saturday and is almost certain to miss our Europa League bout versus Rosenborg next week.

Diego Costa left out of Super Cup squad

Diego Costa looks set to spend the first half of the season away from Madrid after Quique Sánchez Flores omitted the striker from his European Super Cup squad. Atlético are only allowed to register three non-EU nationals for the upcoming season. Argentine winger Salvio made Quique’s squad, and it’s now more likely than ever that Costa will be shown the door – until January at least.

Godín will arrive in Madrid tomorrow and undergo his medical on Friday.
