Just like both semi-final matches in this season’s Trofeo Ramón Carranza, the teams had to eventually be separated by the dreaded penalty shoot-out after a 1-1 draw. Just like on Friday, third-choice goalkeeper Joel stopped a penalty, but this time it wasn’t enough to give us the win. Agüero, Jurado and Mario scored, but Filipe and Reyes failed to convert their spot kicks.
Atlético will face off against Catalan side RCD Espanyol today, in the final of the 56th edition of the Carranza Trophy at 22:15 (GMT/UTC + 01:00 hour). The Rojiblancos defeated hosts Cádiz on Friday evening 1-1, and went through 6-5 on penalties. Espanyol fended off current holders Sevilla last night. The game ended 1-1, but Espanyol went through 4-1 in the shootout.
Our young goalkeeper Joel was the hero in today’s semi final of the Trofeo Ramón de Carranza against Cádiz. The canterano pulled off some great saves and stopped a penalty in the decisive shoot-out. Quique Sánchez Flores started with a B-team today, as most of today’s starters will probably be reserves during the season. They did make for a spectacular match though, with a motivated home side.
Atlético takes part in the prestigious Ramón de Carranza Trophy as its most successful participant, having won the event a record eight times. The rojiblancos will kickoff against organisers and Segunda División B side Cádiz CF today at 22:00 (GMT/UTC + 01:00 hour). Filipe Luis and Sergio Agüero have both been included in Quique’s squad for the game.
