On the last day of the transfer window, youngsters Borja González and Leandro Cabrera were loaned out to Real Murcia and Numancia, respectively. At Atlético, the chances of being handed playing time were slim for the duo, who will now likely see plenty of action in la Liga Adelante.
In a bit of unexpected good news, Diego Godín will reportedly receive his Spanish passport in time to free up one of Atlético’s non-EU spots before the start of the 2011/12 campaign. Sporting director José Luis Caminero and coach Gregorio Manzano will have a little more breathing room in deciding who to temporarily, or perhaps permanently, offload this summer.
Ibrahima looks set to follow team-mate Leandro Cabrera to Recreativo Huelva. An agreement was reached with the Andalusian side yesterday, however, the young forward has requested additional time to review other options on the table for him. Several clubs from Romania have shown interest, as well as Sporting Gijón.
Leandro Cabrera won’t be wearing the red-and-white shirt this season after Recreativo managed to wrap up a deal that will see him spend the season on loan with them. The player will be officially presented on Monday, but could make a debut for his new club this Saturday against Badajoz.
On Saturday Atlético and Real Mallorca face off in the 35th edition of the Trofeo Ciudad de Palma. Diego Godín is ready to make his debut, but he won’t be able to do so alongside Álvaro Domínguez, as the centre back is injured. Our star striker Diego Forlán returned to training this week but will miss the match through injury as well. There were four surprises in Quique’s match selection as several players were left out.
De Gea, Domínguez and Fran Mérida all started for Spain U21 in a 1-1 draw away against Finland. Mérida was taken off at half time for more fire power, while De Gea and Domínguez completed the ninety minutes. Sergio Agüero didn’t play in Argentina’s 1-0 win over Ireland, apparently due to an illness. The forward is already in a plane back to Madrid and let us know on Twitter that he plans on training tomorrow.
With Godín’s signing looking to be imminent, Atlético face a new problem; only three players that don’t have a European passport can be registered to play for us this season in la Liga. Currently our selection includes four “foreigners” in Agüero, Cabrera, Diego Costa and Salvio. Diego Godín would be our fifth player without a European passport, meaning two players would have to be axed.
There were few players present on Atlético’s training complex today, but the most notable player present was Sergio Agüero. The Argentine forward returned from his holiday and worked mostly in the gym, before working on his conditioning outside alongside fitness coach Miguel Peiró. Agüero is likely to be training alongside his teammates Reyes, Cabrera and Ibrahima. The trio stayed in Madrid to work on their fitness.
