Leandro Cabrera’s career is only just beginning. One of the most promising talents to come out of Uruguay in recent years, the towering defender debuted for Defensor Sporting in the Uruguayan Clausura in 2009, helping the team to the Championship. Cabrera played only seven games that season before he was transferred to Atlético.

Atleti bought 50% of the player’s rights for €1.5m, while the other half remained in the hands of his agent, former Uruguayan international Daniel Fonseca.

Cabrera was added to Atlético’s first team, but barely played in his debut season. Near the end of the campaign, Cabrera was handed his debut for los Rojiblancos against Sevilla. Cabrera was on the bench when Atlético won the Europa League and lost the Copa del Rey final in May 2010.

In the following season Lele was loaned to Recreativo. He played 11 times for Recre in the Liga Adelante, mostly as a substitute or in case of suspension or injury.

Due to the maximum amount of 3 extracomunitarians in the squad, Atlético again did not have a place for Cabrera in the 2011/12 season and the defender was sent to Numancia on loan.

Cabrera played six matches for Uruguay U20 in the South American Championship in 2009, where he caught the eye of Atlético scouts. He also played four matches in the World Cup U20 in Egypt later that year.

Cabrera is still waiting for his full cap for Uruguay.
