Joel was born in Leganés in the region of Madrid and is a product of CD Leganés. In the summer of 2007 the goalkeeper was signed by Atlético.

In the 2009/10 season Joel became Atlético B’s first choice goalkeeper after David de Gea had been promoted to the first team.

He made his debut in the first team on 9 May 2010 against Sporting de Gijón, when he came on as a subtitute for the the injured Sergio Asenjo. First choice goalkeeper De Gea was being rested for the Europe League final against Fulham. Due to Asenjo’s injury, Joel took his place on the bench in the final.

Joel made his home debut in the last match of the season, when he was awarded a place in Atlético’s first eleven. Atleti lost 0-3 to Getafe in a match where Quique Sánchez Flores rested many players, as the team had to play in the Copa del Rey final just three days later.

During the 2009/10 season, Sevilla was supposedly interested in signing Joel, but instead of moving away as a free agent, Joel decided to extend his contract until 2014.

In the summer of 2010, Getafe made their interest known, but Joel was needed by Atleti after Sergio Asenjo had not yet recovered from his knee injury. With David de Gea fit the entire season, Joel featured only in one Europa League game and one match for the Copa del Rey.

After De Gea’s departure to Manchester United the #1 jersey was handed to Joel, although he faces stiff competition for a first team spot by the recovered Sergio Asenjo and on loan Thibaut Courtois.
