La Liga: Real Valladolid 0 – 2 Atlético
Koke assists Raúl García and Diego Costa for comfortable away win
Atlético Madrid continued their perfect start to the Liga BBVA season with a 2-0 victory over Real Valladolid.
In the first half, both teams cancelled each other out and few opportunities were created. The only time Atleti looked like scoring was when centre back Rueda hit the crossbar of his own goal, after heading on a Koke free kick.
Koke would be the protagonist in the second half, when the Rojiblancos improved and took over control of the away game. The Spanish international delivered a corner to Raúl García who was denied from close range by the excellent goalkeeper Mariño.
But a new corner kick was earned, and this time Koke and Raúl García did hook up successfully. RG8 scored with a high arching header, which went over Mariño and into the top corner to give Atlético the lead.
Atlético sensed their opponents were vulnerable and continued to attack Valladolid’s goal, leading to an incredible opportunity for Diego Costa after he intercepted a pass by Mariño. The shot stopper made up for his mistake by blocking the Brazilian’s attempt from the edge of the box.
A few minutes later, Costa headed just over the crossbar after an excellent cross from the young Javi Manquillo, who was handed a surprise start but handled himself extremely well.
In the 72nd minute Valladolid came incredibly close to equalising, but Atleti managed to hang on to their one goal lead after surviving a goalmouth scramble. Atleti quickly recovered the ball and scored at the other end. Diego Costa received a fantastic ball over the top from Koke, and calmly slotted it past Mariño to make it 2-0 against his former club.
Ten minutes later, substitute Osorio could have pulled one back for the home side, but after he went around Thibaut Courtois, he saw his shot cleared off the goal-line by Manquillo.
Atlético came close to scoring a third goal, but Cebolla’s attempt with his weaker right foot was stopped by Mariño, and Mario Suárez’ curler in the final minute went just past the wrong side of the post.
