La Liga: RCD Espanyol 1 – 0 Atlético

An own goal blew the chance of becoming leaders.

Diego Simeone had his 100th game today as an Atlético coach but the players weren’t able to give him another victory. A deflected cross on Courtois’ foot decided the game in favor of the home team with a minimal difference.

It was a match to forget. Espanyol were the better team overal and created most of the chances. Pizzi was dangerous the first time after 5 minutes, but his shot was deflected by Alderweireld. The Belgian made his debut today and looked shaky at times but did his job well overal.

Espanyol kept attacking after 20 minutes Diego Costa escaped on the counter, found Villa in the box but the latter couldn’t keep the ball.

Costa at times didn’t look as his own self. A quickly taken free kick by Koke caught him sleeping but the Brazilian made up for his mistake. He assisted his favorite assister a few minutes later but our Spanish international was unlucky and hit the post.

Atleti became more and more dangerous at the end of the first half which resulted in a shot from 9 metres by Costa that whistled at the wrong side of the post.

Espanyol started brightly at the second half. Aguirre’s team pressured and played high. Courtois had to pull out a save on a shot of Lanzarote and was able to pick up the rebound.

But minutes later the Belgian international didn’t manage to keep his clean sheet. Thibaut made himself big to block a shot at the first post, but Sergio Garcia missed the cross and the ball deflected on the goalkeepers foot to end up in the back of the net.

Simeone realized his men needed creativity and more attacking options. He decided to put on Arda and Adrián. His changes looked truly effective when Mario broke through and managed to score but the goal was correctly disallowed for offside. The rojiblancos created more chances after all but Costa couldn’t get the ball between the woodwork.

Cebolla got on the last 15 minutes to try to stay on top with Barcelona. He couldn’t manage to assist Villa and his shot went well over. Courtois even came up front in the final minutes but nothing could help the colchoneros today.

This loss means Atlético won’t equal the best start in La Liga ever. Diego Simeone shouldn’t be too worried though. The players are with their both feet on the ground but it’s a shame they didn’t take the chance to surpass Barcelona in the league standings.

A match to forget. So is Toby’s hair.

  • arjit

I hated that game personally and I wasn’t even aware barca had lost due to my hectic schedule. However, it was bound it happen at some point and it should offer renewed motivation for the team. Our performances over the last few games (except vs real) were gradually getting weaker so this should serve as a wake up call.

  • kris

I agree with Arjit.. After the great game we had against the Blancos, we were getting worse with our performances. This has to wake up all the players and Simeone. We gotta do much better in the upcoming games.

  • Paulo

What a disappointment. Maybe it was deserved. Especially to fans talking about “We’re gonna win, like always” -kinda arrogance. This is Atleti, not barca.
    What a shame for Courtois.
It has been a great ride, up until this point.
Hope Simeone sees his mistakes and rejuvenates the spirit of the team. HOMBRES! Donde estas?
Oliver needs to start, for once and this was the perfect place for it (unless there was something wrong with him, maybe a flu?). If he loses the ball a few times ’cause he’s not so physical, so what? He learns in the process of how make most of the contacts he gets from bigger players than him. Besides, the others give the ball away even though they have more muscle tissue and experience.
The difference is, the kid can create something out of nothing, keep the ball close to his feet and find players, who are free with pin-point passes.
We all know this, but gambling with players coming back from an injury is rarely wise… Although, starting Raul G in a high-pressure-game is always a gamble in my opinion. If Arda was tired, then why not at least Cebolla? He’s got some flair. I think Oliver needs to be in the bench, at least, especially in the away games so he can feel the pressure of the fans.
Diego Ribas back in Atleti would be a dream come true.

Damn, I desperately needed a win after what happened to Egypt in Ghana last week !!

anyway, just like El Cholo said : “losing is part of the game” ..
but what make this losing more hurtful are 2 things :
first : we could have took the sole lead of La Liga, before El Classico
and second : it’s the very next away game in La Liga after Real’s game in Bernabeu, and we won that game !!

But I see a positive side for this lose, it will make us see our problems which we have a lot of them but all the wins we achieved game after game masked these problems
and the biggest and oldest problem of them is the lack of creativity in the midfield
The people who said few weeks ago that we don’t need to bring Diego Ribas back have to think again,
hell we need not one but two Diego Ribas if that is possible !!

and finally, with all due respect to Simeone who said after the game that “Villa was the best performer in the first half”, I think El Cholo is being polite and respectful for El Guaje’s big history, but every body knows that he is the worst player in Atleti, also with all due respect to him and his history

I think it’s time to put Oliver beside Arda & Koke and only Costa in front of them and put Villa on the bench,
it’s time to come back to 4-2-3-1 .. who is with me ?!

  • kris

Exactly, Ahmad!! This is what I have been wanting; for us to play the 4-2-3-1 with Oliver or any other creative mid behind the main striker. I wouldn’t want him to play full matches yet, but we need him at this moment. This will help us with our defense more as well, as the player behind the striker will also come back to help out. We are lacking creativity. We need somebody(other than Costa and Arda) who can dribble past players and create chances for the striker or other players. There’s no loss in doing this at all. Villa has been horrible this season(with all due respect). Simple as that. If we drop him, it will be for the betterment of the team as he has been the weakest point in the attack and this will give more flair and control of our game. I just want Simeone to try this for once and see how good it will work. Aupa Atleti!

  • starvs

Yup, I totally agree, Villa has to sit out and 4-2-3-1 gotta get some run; and no Raul Garcia.

Or, play Villa on the left wing of the ‘3’ with Arda in middle and Koke on right…

I do agree Oli starting could be a nice wake up call all around.

  • Jeronamo

Now you guys are definitely reading my mind… well lets see what happens in our upcoming game

  • pantic#10

    @Amhad: +1, i agree with you.
Cebolla or Oliver can do better than THIS Villa.
We need also the Europa League 2012 Adrian, not this bad clone.
RG8 is still a good player for me and very useful, but i don’t think it was a good idea to start with him after the injury; he’s strong as “falso nueve” or in the 4-2-3-1.

What happened to Egypt? Ghana is strong but that was a shocking score. the qualification is compromised, too bad. Forza Egitto!
