Copa del Rey: Valencia 1 – 1 Atlético

Atlético give up late goal in cup tie

Atletico vs Valencia

Atlético concede in the added time (MARCA)

Atlético faced their first real challenge in defending the Copa del Rey title on Tuesday night when they travelled to Mestalla.

After comfortably beating Sant Andreu, the Rojiblancos now faced Valencia and their new coach Pizzi, who was determined to maintain his 100% record with Los Che.

Pizzi had his men play aggressively and dominantly, which in the end paid off when Valencia earned a 93rd minute equalizer.

Up until the last ten minutes Atleti had soaked up the pressure from the home team without giving away any chances. The Colchoneros were the more dangerous side without having much possession, and took the lead when Raúl García scored a header from close range after a howler by Vicente Guaita, who spilled a Gabi corner kick.

It was yet another goal for the midfielder, who always seems to score when he’s handed a start by Simeone. It was a memorable night for RG8 anyway as he made his 250th appearance in red and white.

In the first half Atleti, where Josuha Guilavogui was a surprise inclusion, had come close to scoring on two occasions, but first Guaita denied Raúl, while Ricardo Costa did well to block Diego Costa shortly before the break.

Valencia lacked creativity and found Thibaut Courtois in their way when finally Bernat created a chance to score.

With fifteen minutes left to play and facing a defeat, Pizzi decided to bring on Feghouli and Piatti, the two tricky wingers and the only two players rested after Saturday’s derby win. The duo immediately altered the game with their direct running, which caused tremendous problems for the tiring Atleti defence.

Shortly after García’s goal, Canales nearly tied the game with a fantastic strike from distance, but Courtois pulled off an incredibly acrobatic save to deny the former Real Madrid and Racing playmaker. Courtois was again called to action when Feghouli assisted Piatti, while Canales did his team a disservice by missing an open goal from only six yards out.

The chances were immediately followed up by another drive from Feghouli, who beat the entire defence before firing right at our Belgian ‘keeper.

It seemed like Atleti would hang on to get away with a sneaky win, but in the 93rd minute the Rojiblancos were caught out of position on a break, which led to the equalizer by Hélder Postiga. Andrés Guardado bombed forward and crossed for Feghouli, who aimed his volley at goal but instead delivered a cross to his Portuguese team mate, who headed the ball into the back of the net from close range.

The return leg of this Copa del Rey clash will be played next Tuesday (21.30 CET) at the Vicente Calderón.

honestly, we didn’t deserve to win .. bur conceding a goal in the last 30 seconds stings a little, especially after the great saves from Courtios .. for sure he is the one who is upset the most

but on the bright side :
we scored a very important and very precious away goal
    Alderweireld made another good game
Guilavogui played a good game as well
RG8 just can not stop scoring ..
he is now the 2nd top scorer in Atleti with 11 goals although he is neither a striker nor a starter
and we made our 2nd longest non-losing streak in the cup with 12 games (Simeone hasn’t lost a single game yet in the cup)

while the only negativity -beside the equalizer- was Diego Costa,
it was his worst game since a very long time
he wasted a couple of easy chances
he made a ridiculous dive that cost him a yellow card (in the cup : suspension is after the 3rd yellow) and he could have injured himself seriously in that dive

The 2nd leg is gonna be very difficult and very complicated .. we need to play much better than that

WOW. i am sad I didn’t get to witness this important match to see our weaknesses. Hopefully, we play much much better against Barcelona to defeat them, and also knock out Valencia out of the Copa del Rey in the 2nd leg of this fixture at the Calderon! Forza Atleti!

Away goal, but shittttt, had that win.

Josh finally got a shot though, and he played well. Showed some nice skill on the ball, good tackle or two, solid passing, was good to see. Toby was also solid as well, squad hopefully is developing some solid depth.

Adrian had a pretty poor game though, just can’t get it going. When he just fell in the middle of the pitch with no one anywhere near him? About the worst phantom trip I’ve ever seen unfortunately, wasn’t even running that fast.

Was worried Filipe was gonna be hurt and miss Barca game, but looks like he recovered well enough.

Courtios just so good, if Mou is crazy enough to bring Diego Lopez to Chelsea…

At the end of the day, only needing a 0-0 draw at the Calderon is a solid result.

Hope Cholo can get Costa motivated against Barca ’cause there just ain’t gonna be too much chances and when there is one, the decision about dribbling and shooting inside the box will have to be done in a split of a second. Yesterday he just wasn’t hungry enough and started unnecessarily dribbling when a more direct approach was needed.
Guilavogui has long legs and a good sense of positioning. Looked confident and when he learns more about the spanish game and his teammates movements, he definitely gets more minutes. Btw. the referee tripping into him when backing up was some funny shit!
Also looking to see more of Alderweireld in the future, he was solid most of the time when Valencia kept on pushing for the goal.
I hope Filipe’s injury isn’t serious. He limped for a long time in the 1st half and in the 2nd half he didn’t defend too bravely.
And again, spectacular Thibauting from Cortois! Without him we would have been knee-deep in shit in the next leg.

    a great news :
Juanfran is available for Barcelona game after the competition committee accepted the plea of Atleti and rescinded the yellow card he received against Malaga

great job from the club directors

and the right back didn’t hide his excitement & happiness and wrote this on his twitter account :

“Thank you all for your messages. I am very happy to be available for the coach in the big game this Saturday”
