Copa del Rey: Sant Andreu 0 – 4 Atlético

Rojiblancos take big step towards next round of the King's Cup

Defending champions Atlético Madrid have started their 2013-2014 Copa del Rey campaign with a comfortable victory over Sant Andreu.

In the first leg of the round of 32 the Rojiblancos beat their hosts 4-0 due to goals by Raúl García, David Villa and a brace by Arda Turan.

Raúl García, who captained the side in the absence of the suspended Gabi, opened the scoring after just 13 minutes when he volleyed in a cross from Filipe.

A few minutes later Arda Turan made the most of an assist by our other wing back. Javi Manquillo received a ball over the top from Koke and found Arda inside the box, who was able to easily convert from close range.

Atleti completely dominated the game and seemed to expand their lead through Adrián, but Perfect 7 first saw his shot blocked and later hit the side netting. Despite not bagging a goal Adri did show more signs that the form of his spectacular Europa League campaign of 2012 is slowly returning.

Tiago shot wide just before the break while Sant Andreu goalkeeper Morales did very well to deny Javi Manquillo at the start of the second half.

Morales had no chance in the 57th minute when Adrián, Arda Turan and Raúl García turned and twisted their way through the box. Arda turned on a dime to beat the entire Catalan defence and slotted the ball past Morales to put Atleti three up. With the goal the Turk tied his 5 goal tally of last season.

After an hour of play Sant Andreu nearly equalized when they hit the crossbar with a header from a few yards out. In the rebound Aranzubia tipped a bicycle kick over the bar, which led to a new corner which again required our backup ‘keeper to respond to an attempt from close range.

Simeone brought on his star duo David Villa and Diego Costa to close out the game and the latter came within inches of scoring after connecting with a perfect cross from Manquillo. Some moments later Costa again missed by a hair after Adrián had slipped him the ball.

Five minutes before the end David Villa played a one-two with Costa and sliced through the defence. The Asturian striker, with some luck involved, went past Morales and slid the ball into the empty net to make it four.

Atlético and Sant Andreu will play the return leg at the Vicente Calderón on Wednesday the 18th of December.

as usual, every time he gets the chance to play he makes a great game
    well done Manquillo

Raul Garcia : I Love You Man

and although Atleti dominated the game, but Aranzubia made a couble of great saves
it was nice to finally see him in Atleti shirt

and why not extend his contract which I think it’s just one season .. isn’t it ?

  • Pantic#10

Sorry sant andreu… We have no merci 🙂
Very good game with beautiful goals and playing by our subs.
    RG8 for La Roja! I want a petition 😉

  • Arjit

Manquillo is awesome. Arda’s second goal was beautiful. Didn’t catch the game, anybody who how Oliver played?

  • Jimbo_With_the_Dancingshoes

for me he didn’t do quite well, actually. he lost the ball quite a lot and didn’t show to much of himself. although there were (of course) glims of brilliance every now and then.

  • Dircil

Raul is a triffling player, everybody knows that. The only shining thing about this guy is his good positioning. He reminds me the image of Pippo Inzaghi!

  • Arjit

Thanks Jimbo, I think he needs a game or two consecutively to get in the rhythm. Either that or shadaw Diego for a few months ;).

  • piserakos

Aranzubia’s contract is only for one year and I don’t think we will renew him cause he is 34 allready and we have Roberto, Asenjo on load. Bono who maybe next year will be a first team player and some other options for goalkeepers. Oliver was ok he could perform better. Super-Man-quillo was fantastic he was one of the top Atleti’s players

  • piserakos

Villa had much hunger to score. Anyway I would like to see more back-ups and youngsters but it’s ok. Maybe will see them at the next game against Sant-Andreu. Oh, Aranzubia may stay if only we buy a super goalkeeper(Courtois) and we sell Roberto and Asenjo and keep Aranzubia for one more year until Bono will be ready cause he is a good and cheap back up option.

    Off topic, but why not.
Borja baston scored for Deportivo a couple of days ago with a clinical finish, 6th this year in 14 matches i think, for Deportivo who is currently at the top of la segunda. Do you guys think he has a future with atleti? He was such a talent and I hope he can achieve his potential! It takes a while to recover from such an injury as he suffered but you can do it, look at costa! If Adrian or baptistao would play elsewhere next year i would like to see borja as 4th striker and learn from costa and villa! Would be happy to hear your thoughts guys!

  • piserakos

Borja is a good striker but he can’t play at Atleti right now. I think we have to sell him and put a small buy-back cause.

  • Dircil

We have a great finisher (Costa) and what we really need for the other foward position might be a competent second striker who knows how to draw attention from the defenders and messes up the opponent’s defense line. Someone who have the same playing style as Neymar is preferred for me.

  • kris

Borja is definitely a great player, and I think after a loan to a top flight team next season, he will be definitely ready for Atleti for the following year. He will be 23 by then, but that’s still okay, as Costa also started playing with us regularly at the age of 24…. Baston is a great talent, no need to let go of him at all.

  • Sash

Great to hear your thoughts guys. I agree with you kris! Lets hope Deportivo makes it to la liga and wants to loan borja again, considering they know what he can do. And for that matter, lets hope Mallorca makes it as Well and want to have Thomas one more year! That kid is going to be a beast!

  • piserakos(Griegos Rojiblancos)

guys Depor probably will come back to Primera and Borja will probably loan at a team at Primera so we will have the chance to see him better. He will have his chances at a bigger league and maybe we win some money.
Any way we allready have 5-6 great canteranos (Oliver, Manquillo, Saul, Bono, Borja, Aquino, Thomas) and others who I don’t know much about them. I would love to have 3 of them at our team years and cash some money from the others. Aquino and Borja should stay at the big team or let them play at a Primera team(on loan or sell them with buy-back cause) cause they can play at a Primera team but I don’t think they can play at this Atleti.
