Champions League: AC Milan 0 – 1 Atlético

Atleti snatch late win in first leg at San Siro

Diego Costa atletico madrid milan

Match winner Diego Costa (AS)

Atlético Madrid have taken a big step towards the quarter finals of the UEFA Champions League after snatching a 1-0 win at San Siro.

Diego Costa scored a late goal for the visitors after Milan had failed to capitalize on their chances in the first half. Atleti rode their luck and ultimately emerged victorious when Diego Costa headed in the winning goal six minutes from time.

For a long time it didn’t seem like Atleti would leave the game unscathed, as Milan created a series of huge opportunities in the first half through their dangerous duo of Mario Balotelli and captain Kaká. Atleti were uncharacteristically sloppy in possession and lacked aggression, allowing Kaká to strike against the crossbar early on.

Just a few minutes later Thibaut Courtois pulled off an amazing save to push Andrea Poli’s header against the post, preventing what would have been a deserved goal at that point.

After half an hour of play Kaká shot just over the crossbar after a back heel by Balotelli and the Italian struck just wide himself just a few minutes later.

Atleti created very little and former Rojiblanco ‘keeper Christian Abbiati calmly collected powerless headers by Raúl García and Diego Godín on the few occasions we went forward. At the start of the second half a spectacular bicycle kick by Diego Costa nearly led to a surprise goal, but his acrobatic effort went wide of the target.

Milan seemed to run out of energy in the second half and they lost their edge when Balotelli went off injured, allowing Atleti to take control over the game. A warning shot was fired by Raúl García, who was at the end of a lovely move down the right wing, but RG8’s shot went wide.

In the final quarter-hour Atleti pushed Milan back and won a series of corner kicks, one of which led to Diego Costa’s goal in the 84th minute. Ignazio Abate unintentionally headed on the ball towards the far post, where Costa was left all alone. The striker powerfully headed the ball past Abbiati to give Atleti an important away goal.

Milan nearly struck back through Adil Rami, but the centre back’s amazing strike missed Courtois’ goal. Atleti could’ve poured more salt in Milan’s wounds in the added time after Diego Costa won a free kick on the edge of the box, but Gabi’s attempt didn’t make it past the wall. And so Milan vs. Atlético finished 0-1 which puts us in a great position ahead of the return clash on the 11th of March.

  • Good performance although Milan played very well.
I really hope Filipe is available for the 2nd leg because Insua got beaten so many times on that wing.
    Aupa ATLETI!!!!!!!!

  • kris

I’m a PROUD Rojiblanco right now!! So proud,, it’s just unbelievable!!!!! Winning at the San Siro is incredible, especially in the Champions League!! Great job all players and coaches!!! Forza Atleti!

  • jeronamo

Well this means i’ll enjoy my 25th birthday tomorrow for sure

  • kris

    Happy birthday to you Jeronamo….

  • jeronamo

    Thanks Kris 😀

  • Dircil

Jeronamo, tasting the atletico’s win over Milan right be4 your birthday is so sweet right. Hope u have a best bithday eva!!!!

  • Pantic#10

And the fact that Villa and Diego didn’t played … Means that we want win La Liga so bad!
Milan played a great 1st half and Courtois did 2 amazing saves but after that we took control of the game.
Not a great match by Arda.
Miranda lost Balotelli a couple of times.
    Beside this, we played well.
    So happy!
That’s a nice gift by Atleti for your birthday Jeronamo 😉

we show again that we are team of fighters, and iam so happy..
first half was not so good, we were scared, and make so many mistakes.. gabi did most of them with no reason
we are so happy to have courtois he and neuer are the best gks in the world
for me insua show up that he is a big fighter altough most of milans attacks came from his side but he was ok, just need more selfconfidence
but cant wait return off filipe luis 🙂
gabi, miranda and turan were not so good last night

  • Chewie

Give Insua some credit – Taarabt was amazing, so the argentinian did the best he could. He’s a little shy and straight-forward both in attack and defense but he’s strong and fast, definitely not the worst sub, though obviously not Filipe. And he took De Sciglio out in a subtle yet merciless manner. Playing against Atletico now is not only a tactial, but also a psychological and physical challenge. Only a few teams in the world can survive the pressure, especially over two legs.

  • jeronamo

Its true guys that win really kicked things off for me, mmmmm the taste of victory, thanks guys.

I agree with Chewie 100%, i was even wondering why we didn’t snatch him up seeing how easy it would have been to get him from qpr

  • Ali

If we qualify for quarter final, then we’ll face bayern right?

  • Ahmad Hossainy

a great and a very important victory, and a historical one too,
our first win against Milan (although it was the first official game ever between the 2 sides),
but still, we beat AC Milan, the 7 time UCL Champions, at the legendary stadium of San Siro

BUT it’s not over yet, as much a 1-0 away win is very important as it’s very close margin, very open and very tricky
in many occasions in UCL, a team lose at home and win away
in recent memory, Arsenal beat Bayern last season at Alianz Arena 2-0 after 2 weeks of being thrashed 3-0 by Bayern at the Emirates
in fact, Arsenal did this 3 times against German clubs in the last couple of years
beside Bayern, they also did it against BVB & Schalke .. losing in England and wining in Germany
So, we have to be very careful

on the other hand, there is a fact about that win nobody can argue about :
it will give us a very big confidence, it will bring back our self-esteem after we lost it recently
yes, beating Valladoild was very important, it gave us 3 important points in the title race, but it didn’t fix so much of our psychological problems .. beating Milan at San Siro fixed them all, especially at defense level, as we kept a clean sheet

we needed that before 2 very important games in La Liga :
Osasuna in El Sadar, where Barca & Real couldn’t win this season,
and where Diego Costa has a lot of haters, more than in any other stadium (except Sanchez Pizjuan !)
and maybe more than in Bernabeu too
then a very crucial game against Real Madrid

speaking of Costa, he is just keep getting booked, in La Liga, in the cup and in UCL
another booking against Osasuna and he will miss Real Madrid game .. again
he must be super calm and super careful,
and what Simone said that both Osasuna and Real games are worth 3 points is not a 100% percent true
Real game worth 6 points .. and it could worth a whole season if there was a tie in the points and it came to head-to-head results

but there are two things that make me not so worry about Costa being booked vs Osasuna :
1- as I said before : referees are now under pressure in Atleti games, after what they did to us since the second round in La Liga, especially in Almeria game and in first leg game against Real, they will not easily take a big decision against us unless they are 110% sure it’s correct .. at least in the next 2 or 3 games

2- Raul Garcia, the man who gave Osasuna a lot, in his first spell with them .. and especially in the second one
if RG8 is on the field, I wish he can make the fans and Osasuna players less hustle against Costa

someone here asked last night about UEFA yellow cards rule,
I have UEFA regulations on my computer, and this is what it says on this subject :

    article 21.02 (b) :
[a player is suspended for the next competition match] “from the first match in the group stage, after three cautions in three different matches, as well as following any subsequent odd-numbered
caution (fifth, seventh, ninth, etc.) ”

    article 21.03 :
“Single yellow cards and pending suspensions are always carried forward, either to the next stage of the competition,
or to another club competition in the current season”

so, for Atleti, this the situation:

*Juanfran got 3 cards and got suspended (against Porto at the Calderon), so he shall be suspended again if he picked up another 2 yellows (his 4th & 5th)

*RG8 & Insua both have 2 bookings and they are 1 booking away from suspension

*Costa, Gabi, Mario, Tiago, Godin, Toby, Adrian & Aranzubia all have 1 booking and are 2 bookings away from suspension

*all the other players are clean and they need 3 yellow to got suspended

if I misunderstood the rules, please, somebody correct me

  • Brad

    Thank’s Ahmad for the explanation.

  • piserakos

Thank you Ahmad for this explanation, I agree with the most with you… Happy birthday Jeronamo!
About Insúa are you crazy? This guy had a great game, he was little shy and that logical but he was great. Turan, Gabi and Miranda had a bad game. It was the classic Garcia, he only gets usefull when he scorers. Amazing Thibauting and Costa had a great game, he had a lot of passion and wanted to play great, I’ve missed that latter… Cebolla really gave us a lot. Anyway Ahmad about Costa’s bookings, well you are right he had taken a lot of silly bookings but if you see them well you will realise that most of them are at 2014. Vamos Atleti!
By the way there was a Milan fan guy yesterday and he predicted 0-1 with a late goal, i’m sure that if he didn’t betted it he will be so sad today. Anyway well done to him!

filipe luis can give us more attack options from left flank..
hey guys let me asking u smth, what do u think who would be good signing in july?
    does enibody thinking about that?
must say that boy griezman would be exelent for us, he has speed and technique and great left foot..
also carlos vela is very good
i think with them we could have a new dimension of quickness..
p.s. and for the future angel correa for sure 🙂

  • piserakos

They say Correa is a done deal… For me it’s simple!
KEEP COURTOIS! Nothing more nothing less. If we can keep him then I would be glad. If not, then we should bring Keylor Navas. He is great and he would be cheap. After that i would like to keep Costa, or sell him for many millions and bring someone also too good. And keep Diego:)
To conclute. Courtois (or Navas). Diego Costa (or someone at his class), Diego. And after that we should sell Adrian and bring this Correa guy

  • Ian

how about casillas if courtois failed?
he could do a great job and he has a point trying to prove real wrong in letting him go to us…

  • kris

Noway Casillas will move to Atleti. That move just WON’T HAPPEN!

  • anshary

Casillas is actually good. He didnt concede much this season actually when he got to play. Was it 11hours without conceding or something..? But like kris said, i highly doubt he would wanna come to atletico, if ever real would be crazy enough to sell him to us. But its good to dream though.

  • kris

I would LOVE Casillas in Madrid, he has always been one of the top keepers ever since he started playing for Madrid, even though, I believe quite overrated. Casillas to Atleti seems like an impossible move in this decade…

  • kris

    *Casillas in Atletico Madrid.

  • Ali

If we failed with courtois then we’ll eventually sign hugo lloris I think. And between anyways knows that if we qualify for quater final then we’ll face bayern munich right?

  • Ali

  • jeronamo

Thanks Piserakos lol I saw it late

  • Daneatl

@Ali, Theres to be a draw the 21st march.

PISERAKOS i agree with that fact, keeping courtois would be great and i dont know why we left roberto to go.. he is having a very good season with olympiakos, i think he would be good for us.. maybe not as good as courtois but it could do..
there is no way to casillas come to us, he is not like that..
i think we are gona to sell costa probably to chelsea i have a feeling about that
here(in my country) many newspapers written that MU want to sign filipe and miranda and they are very serious about that..
in my opinion miranda can go(cause we already have a good replacement in toby ald. and i want to see more from very promising gimenez) but filipe no way!! for me he is one of the best left backs on the world
good in attack and at the back
i would sell cebolla and adrian and keep diego, but bring another good striker like carlos vela 🙂

  • Jelle

NESTOR: If we sell Diego Costa, then we need an attacker like him. A player who got some speed and are good in the air.

    i agree…

  • Bushdoctor504

I know that Diego Costa is in great form and english clubs and the like are paying attention to buy in the summer… his finishing skills and holding ability are apparent… I’ve been impressed continuously throughout the season… But his pure will and determination are his greatest intangibles… He wants it more than anyone and it is obvious… I’m so grateful that he fights for us!!! He deserves the lions share of the credit for us being in a favorable position for the 2nd leg of this CL tie.. Top 5 striker in the world right now! He’s a total fucking beast!!!! Aupa atletì!!!!

  • Chewie

It’s not that Filipe’s just one of the best LB in the world, it’s that he is also a perfect match for Simeone’s scheme.
Just like Gabi and our impenetrable defensive duo.

  • piserakos

Don’t listen to English media… Felipe won’t go for less than 40 mill. Many teams wanted him for 30 mil and we didn’t sold him. Miranda also i think won’t leave for less than 25 mill. So there is no problem!

  • Ali

There’s a rumor that Real Madrid are preparing a bid for thibaut courtois. F**k real they just don’t want us to succeed trying to get our core player instead of already having two world class goalkeepers. If we bid 20 million for courtois then real will bid 30 or 35. We’ll have no chance in bidding war and that will al left upto courtois. I think they want to sign him cuz casillas will leave if he don’t they won’t sign him. As far as I know. Hope there’s is no reality In this rumor.

  • Brad

Ali, my best guess is that Chelsea is trying t drive up the price on Courtois so they can try to get more than a 1-1 swap when they move on Costa this summer

  • piserakos
Real want Courtois?? Hahahaha!! It is just Real’s and Chelsea’s tricks to make our lives difficult

  • Ali

Chelsea will sign cavani or falcao not costa. Jose mourinho use a lone striker in his formation so costa doesn’t fit in mourinho type of play cuz he needs support from another striker. Although cavani and falcao can play as lone striker role. So it’s a good news for us that their main target are cavani and falcao not costa. And our president made a clear statement that costa will not leave his beloved madrid city. And I think it’s upto courtois where he wants to play next season and I’m 85 % sure that he’ll stay with us.

  • Ali

And it will be good for us that we sign Patrick Bamford along with courtois. But I think there will be a bidding war for courtois.

  • starvs

I of course prefer Courtois to EVERYONE. But I would love to sign Casillas just for the spite factor, and see him regain his past great form at the rival of the club is a true IDOL at. It really is unimaginable to me how he has been demoted at Madrid.

  • Ahmad Hossainy

Cebolla has decided to leave next summer, because he is not playing too much

    a good decision for everyone,

Sosa also has to go back to Metalist, and Adrian must leave too, but I prefer a loan not selling
and those 3 spot can be covered by only 2 players : Oli & Correa

Thank you Onion for 2 great seasons,
I wish you all the best luck, with your next team, and with Uruguay in the World Cup

guys, the chances of Casillas playing for Atleti are smaller than the chances of Messi playing for Real Madrid
I can not even believe you are talking about this .. so, please .. stop !

and it’s the same for Courtios,
he will never play for Real Madrid, not after he saw what does Atleti mean,
not after a great 3 years at the Calderon
he is now a true rojiblanco .. and a true rojiblanco can never play for their enemies

it’s just that Florentino still believe he can sign any player he wants (he quickly forgot his big failure of signing Neymar)
and that Mourinho is missing with us after we fucked him so hard last season
he said himself just few months ago that he can not force a player to stay against his will
he was talking about Mata, who eventually had to sell him .. and for a big rival such as Man Utd

but yet, Caminero has a hard work to do to sign Thibaut, but I’m sure he will succeed

after all, he has to fix his mistake after failing to sign him at the summer of 2011 when we were outbid by Chelsea (who after few days gave him to us on loan)
and the sad thing is that he cost Chelsea only 9 million,
but at that time, we didn’t have too many millions to pay 9 of them for a 19 year old GK who was playing at Genk
so, we chose not to take that risk .. and now we have to pay 25 M .. after we beg Chelsea to sell him for us 🙁

  • kris

I could see the frustration in Cebolla Rodriguez. He’s a regular in the Uruguay National Team which is one of the top international teams in the world, may I remind you, yet only gets to play about 30 minutes every other game. This just isn’t the way to become a successful player and improve yourself. As I said, Simeone needs to start rotating more and keeping all the players happy or else we can easily see more substitute players wanting to leave in the near future. But good for Cristian and Atleti. I thank him for all he has given us and hope he has a successful career after Atleti. He could maybe playing for Southampton next season, or Liverpool. I would like to see him in the Premier League, he would fit in.

  • kris

Somehow, if we could keep Costa, Diego, Koke, Arda, and the regular defense of Filipe, Godin, Miranda, and Juanfran, with Thibaut Courtois in between the posts, we are destined for more success next season!

  • starvs

Yes Kris, that is the essential base of the team, but you forgot Gabi. Can’t imagine we end up with ALL of them next season, that seems too much. Unprecedented…?

  • Ali

If we win la liga or atleast finished second then no one will leave. And I’m really worried about courtois psg are also in the market for a goalkeeper and Real Madrid attracts every player even eden hazard said that every player won’t regret a chance to play for Real Madrid. Aguero was ready to go real but they didn’t bid for him and in the end he also said that has has no offer other then city.

  • Ali

  • Ali

Except neymar and other barcelona targets cuz barcelona is bigger club then real. That’s why they attract more good players then real. Hope real don’t attract courtois.

  • marcelo

Hope Hamburg get relegated so we can go for Adler

  • Jeronamo

I think our players out on loan are going to be in with a shout next season ( Leo, Oli, Saul, Josuha ). They’re all very promising and if Adrian stays I think it may upset me because in him staying it has hindered playing time for better players

  • Kulan

How will Atleti be able to raise the money to get both Correa (13-15 million) and Courtois (20-25) without selling anyone? Maybe they are counting on winning the UCL?
More likely will they involve the devil (aka Mendes) in both deals…
    Will it be worth it?

  • piserakos

It’s 11.5 for Correa. We sold Roberto (6mill), we will probably sell Asenjo (4mill), Cebolla (don’t know how much) and maybe we will sell Adrian (10mill).
So we will have about 25mill from them. Now we can take Courtois. So what about the next 11.5? We have more income this year! So maybe we will have the money

  • Kris

Yes, totally forgot about Gabi but in my opinion, he’s replacable by one of our younger players, not next season but the season after that….. It may be unprecedented, but doesn’t mean it won’t happen. We managed to keep all our star players from last season with thev exception of the star striker Falcao, even though we finished well below the “big two”. This season, so far, we have been neck to neck with both Barcelona and Real Madrid, sometimes even leading them. Gil promised at the beginning of the season for salary increases for all our players, if we can maintain the champions league place once again; that seems destined already. If we could actually win La Liga he promised for even more. The players are here to play for us. They all want to play for Simeone, who has flourished everywhere he has coached or played.

All I am trying to say is that this is a project we are working on, and these players would all want to play a role in it. Hell, with God’s will, we might even win La Liga this season AND atleast get to the semi finals of the Champions League. Trust in Simeone! Forza Atleti!

  • Ahmad Hossainy

    @Kulan :
we already sold Roberto to Olympiakos for about 10 million, and probably will sell Asenjo to Villareal, for 4 million as in his loan contract
and we have a couple of loanees who we don’t need, some of them play in Primera and some in Segunda, while Silvio is at Benfica
we can get 4 of 5 millions if we sold some of them
and about UCL, we already had 30 million, which can increase significantly as we go forward in the competition

and don’t forget, we now have a sponsor, Azerbaijan, and by the way, we will wear black armbands and black ribbons against Osasuna & Real Madrid in the memory of Khojaly massacre which happened there 25–26 February 1992

So, no .. we do not need to win UCL to finance Courtios & Correa deals
even if we been knocked out next week by Milan, we will have 60 million next summer

    @Marcelo :
this is a harsh thing to say man !
Hamburg are great and historical club,
they are the only club who never been relegated from the Bundesliga, not Bayern .. not BVB
so I would never wish them to be relegated just to sign one of their players

    @Kris :
trust me, no one is leaving next season of our 11 starters + RG8 & Toby
and we will sign Diego permanently,
and even Villa will sign for another season at least
(yes, he signed for 3 seasons for 5 million, but we paid Barca only 2 million, and should pay another 2 if we want him for another season, and 1 million if we want him for the third) .. and I think we do want him

    I’m only worried about 2 players :
Courtios, we have the money, but we still waiting for Chelsea approval
and Tiago, who is almost 33 and was already thinking since last season to leave to some easier but yet high paying league such as Turkish league, some Arab leagues or MLS,
but I believe he should stay for one more season at least,
he still can give us a lot, and if we didn’t win La Liga this season, we will have a bigger chance the next one, and if we won it, he should be there .. after all what he gave us since 2010

  • piserakos

We can sell Ruben Perez for 3-4 million, Silvio 5 and some others… By the way Hamburg wins 3-0 Dortmund! Oh 2-0 it was a foul…. What the hell! I’m loosing 20euros here Dortmund!!! Tiago maybe will leave cause we will have Saul and Guilavogui to fight for his place! Real 1-0 with an offside goal, classic real

  • Ali

I think none of you guys are interested in firmino. He has 1 year and half year left in his contract and will cost is around 8 to 10 m. And he’s a great player.

  • Ali

I highly doubt that some players will leave if we finished third. If we finished second or win the league then no one will leave.

  • Ali

    Except Rodriguez and adrian

  • marcelo

Haha I know man. Atleti> all though. I doubt Thibaut will stay so we need to get a top keeper ASAP. The games vs Almeria and Milan showed that.

if we dont sign Courtois i think the best option would be Pepe Reina, he could sign for free next season..
i think we need another one classic forward like Costa and if Costa leave, then we need two of them..
yes maybe Leo can cover that positon but ATM he did not convince me at all…

  • Ahmad Hossainy

    Ali, I believe the opposite,
if we won La Liga or UCL this season, I’m afraid that some players will leave .. for a new challenge, and maybe for more money .. and in that case, no body would blame them
but if we didn’t, I think all of them will stay to give it another shot

and it’s not a problem to finish 3rd, not for me at least
what really mater is the number of points .. if we got 90 points and finished 3rd, it’s fine with me
it will be 14 points more than we got last season .. and I think it will be a new Atleti record
and it will mean that we are keeping growing, and next season we could have 100 points and win the title

honestly guys, you should prepare yourselves for that
it’s a very close race, one game could make you champion or make you third
the most important thing is the continuity,
I don’t want to win La Liga once after 18 years then wait for another 18 years to win it again,
just like what we did in the “doblete” year, it was the first Liga in 19 years (since 1977) and we are waiting to win it again since then

I don’t want to be like Dortmund, wining two leagues, then selling all their stars,
and now they are 17 points behind Bayern, and could be 20 if Bayern won tomorrow !

I think who will decide if we stay big and try to be bigger or we go back small again is not Simeone, not Caminero, and not the players .. but only two men who will decide that :
    Cerezo & Gil

  • Will

That Frenchman Griezmann is playing extremely nice. The guy is driving La Real to an easy win against Barcelona.

  • Ahmad Hossainy

only Atleti won in Anoeta this season
and since January 2012, Sociedad lost only 5 times in 42 games in La Liga at home
3 of them were against Atleti

Real Madrid is yet to play there this season, I wish they can stop them too, at least with a draw

if our dream came true and we won La Liga this season, a part of this success will be owed to these brave clubs,
those who play like hombres .. those who have big cojones ..
those who are not intimidated by the millions of Real & Barca
such as Athletic, Villareal, Sociedad & Osasuna
and I consider Rayo one of them, even though they didn’t get anything from their games against the big 3 this season

Massive Respect for all of Them

but I wish Osasuna players forget their cojones at home tomorrow 🙂

  • piserakos

@ahmad… Agree with you… Today (in fact yestarday) Sosiedad played like a true team. They asked arasate (sosiedad’s coach) before the match if he would be happy with a draw and he answered of course no we want to win!! I also think Valencia is one of the… All of them played like really men against real and barca they tried to win… Also Levante is one team!!! All the other were playing like gays!! Vamos Atleti!!! Wake me up from this dream… So if we win today we go to play a derby with Real for the 1st place?? Is anyone here ever lived one?? I’m not sure if even excisted one! Vamos Atleti!! Beat Osasuna

  • kris

It would be EPIC for us to win tomorrow because if we do, then that means El Derbi Madrileno is going to have more value in it, then just another Madrid Derby. It’s the two Madrid Teams fighting for “sole” first place lead. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, we’re gonna need to HAVE to win tomorrow. Aupa Atleti!

  • kris

Take a look at this, guys. This would help us immensely, but shouldn’t we probably demand more or wait for a better suitor?

  • Ali

What’s greizman market value or release clause?

  • piserakos

@Kris…. We have already 3 more offers… according to AS they are not as good as this (financial)

  • Ahmad Hossainy

Kris, they have been talking about this deal for a while
it’s not a bad deal, but it’s not a very good one either

155 million for naming our new stadium “Etihad Stadium” for 10 years
so, that means 15.5 million per year .. not bad,
but how much did Etihad Airways paid for Man City for naming City of Manchester stadium (also for 10 years) ?!
400 million pound (500 million euro)
    a huge difference
