La Liga: Barcelona 1 – 1 Atlético
Atlético Madrid win the Liga BBVA!
It’s been two hours since it happened, and I still cannot believe it. Atlético Madrid are champions of Spain!
It took 38 games and a nerve wracking 90 minutes at Camp Nou, but Atlético have deservedly claimed the La Liga BBVA title to shock Barcelona, Real Madrid and the entire world of football.
For a while it seemed like Atleti’s incredible campaign collapsed at the final stage. After just fifteen minutes the Rojiblancos lost their star player, Diego Costa, to injury and less than five minutes later Arda Turan followed him to the bench.
When Álexis Sánchez scored a fantastic goal, practically out of nowhere, it seemed like Barcelona would end up with the championship. The Culés needed a win at home, while a draw would see Atleti end the campaign on top of the league.
Atlético regained their composure at the end of the first half, which gave the players confidence ahead of the second. Diego Simeone must’ve given a thunderous speech at half time, because his players came out blazing after the break. Within a minute David Villa struck the post, while Pinto denied the Asturian a moment later when he again appeared in front of goal.
From one of the corners his team won, Diego Godín headed in the goal that would end up winning Atlético the title. On the most important of occasions, it seems there’s always one of our centre backs to come in and score a vital goal. It was the 8th of our last 11 league goals to come from a set piece, six of which came from corner kicks, this one being delivered by Gabi.
Diego Godín came through at one end, and defended the other with his life. The entire year our defensive line of Juanfran, Miranda, Godín and Filipe have stayed unbeaten and this time it would be no different.
Barcelona tried to force a winning goal, but the team couldn’t break down the wall Diego Simeone put up. The entire season the coach has had an answer to his opponent Tata Martino, who, after the game, announced his departure, shortly before congratulating Atlético Madrid on winning their 10th La Liga title.
