La Liga: Barcelona 1 – 1 Atlético

Atlético Madrid win the Liga BBVA!

Diego Simeone atletico

Simeone writes history (AS)

It’s been two hours since it happened, and I still cannot believe it. Atlético Madrid are champions of Spain!

It took 38 games and a nerve wracking 90 minutes at Camp Nou, but Atlético have deservedly claimed the La Liga BBVA title to shock Barcelona, Real Madrid and the entire world of football.

For a while it seemed like Atleti’s incredible campaign collapsed at the final stage. After just fifteen minutes the Rojiblancos lost their star player, Diego Costa, to injury and less than five minutes later Arda Turan followed him to the bench.

When Álexis Sánchez scored a fantastic goal, practically out of nowhere, it seemed like Barcelona would end up with the championship. The Culés needed a win at home, while a draw would see Atleti end the campaign on top of the league.

Atlético regained their composure at the end of the first half, which gave the players confidence ahead of the second. Diego Simeone must’ve given a thunderous speech at half time, because his players came out blazing after the break. Within a minute David Villa struck the post, while Pinto denied the Asturian a moment later when he again appeared in front of goal.

From one of the corners his team won, Diego Godín headed in the goal that would end up winning Atlético the title. On the most important of occasions, it seems there’s always one of our centre backs to come in and score a vital goal. It was the 8th of our last 11 league goals to come from a set piece, six of which came from corner kicks, this one being delivered by Gabi.

Diego Godín came through at one end, and defended the other with his life. The entire year our defensive line of Juanfran, Miranda, Godín and Filipe have stayed unbeaten and this time it would be no different.

Barcelona tried to force a winning goal, but the team couldn’t break down the wall Diego Simeone put up. The entire season the coach has had an answer to his opponent Tata Martino, who, after the game, announced his departure, shortly before congratulating Atlético Madrid on winning their 10th La Liga title.

  • Urban

No words OMG thank you God!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sooooooooooooooo deserved

  • Ahmad Hossainy

This is the number of Trophies for Atleti vs our former stars since they left:
    Atleti 6-3 Torres
    Atleti 4-3 Aguero
    Atleti 4-1 De Gea
    Atleti 1-0 Falcao

Atleti will always win, Atleti is bigger than any player, Atleti is a giant

Remember when I said that if Barca won the title it will be deserved ?! .. I lied !
I was just trying to prepare you and myself in case we lost the title !
They did not deserve a shit .. they had a very bad season,
87 points are a lot in many leagues, but they are very few in La Liga, especially for Barca (and Real) who have the best players in the world and yet they are trying to sign more and more

Villareal game alone was enough to prove that they didn’t deserve the title,
Villareal scored 4 goals and Barca scored one but they were the ones who took the 3 points, and those 3 points were what kept them alive until the last day !

But Barca fans deserve all the respect,
I was already impressed when 3000 of them applauded us in the Calderon after we knocked them out of UCL, so how about seeing 98,000 doing the same thing at the Camp Nou
I can never imagine Real Madrid fans doing that .. not in a million years

I wish Oliver & Saul were there today .. but that’s all right, there are many titles to come

But the one I really wished he was there today is Forlan .. too bad this title came after he left
in 2008-09 he lead the team to score 80 goals in La Liga (more than this season, 77) and he scored 32 of them wining both The Pichichi and The Golden Boot, but he didn’t have great defenders to help him to win the title as we conceded 57 goals (same as Recreativo Huelva, last team in the table that season) !!

Diego Forlan deserved La Liga title, and he is the only one I can say that about him
not Torres, not Simao, not De Gea, not Falcao .. and for sure not El Rata

When Simeone took off Adrian after he played as a sub, that was the second time he does that after he did it with Sosa against Valencia .. and none of them has complained .. not with a single a word or a single gesture
great coach .. and great players

Few weeks ago I watch an interview with Carlos Simeone, El Cholo’s father
yesterday I saw El Cholo hugging an old man in the stands after the game, and I’m almost sure he was Señor Carlos

I have finished my celebrations, and now I will start my dreams about the only trophy Atleti have never won,
    The UEFA Champios League
    We are coming Lisbon

Still in the midst of Believing This !!
Could’t cry normally on this and never had for any before.

BBC Sports’ rating of our men in the last game of the season:

    Thibaut Courtois (goalkeeper) – 7
Chelsea’s on-loan keeper wasn’t forced into too much action, wonderfully protected by his outstanding defence. But he made one good save from Dani Alves and provided an assured figure under crosses.

    Juanfran (right-back) – 8
The Spain international was simply outstanding, brilliantly nullifying the threat of first Pedro and then Neymar, whilst also showing his trademark deceptive attacking ability to regularly create danger going forward.

    Miranda (centre-back) – 7
As always, solid as a rock and utterly dependable. Miranda’s unflappable partnership with Diego Godin has been a major reason for Atletico’s success and many regard him as one of La Liga’s best centre-backs. He showed why today.

    Diego Godin (centre-back) – 8
Did everything right in defence, making umpteen clearances, blocks and tackles to snuff out Barca’s increasingly hopeful attacks. And of course, he was also the goalscoring hero with an unstoppable thumping header.

    Filipe Luis (left-back) – 7
Although he wasn’t able to get forward as often as usual, the Brazilian was solid in defence and smart in possession. Like compatriot Miranda, he is very unlucky to have been left out of Brazil’s World Cup squad.

Arda Turan (right midfield) – 6
Departed the field in tears after suffering a hip injury in a strong challenge from Fabregas. Now faces a race to regain fitness for the Champions League final.

    Tiago (centre midfield) – 7
Disciplined and steady in midfield, the former Chelsea man would never have dreamed that he would end up as a La Liga champion at the age of 33, but he’s been a key contributor in the last few weeks.

    Gabi (centre midfield) – 8
Another selfless, wholehearted and utterly determined performance from the captain, who deserves far more recognition than he receives as Diego Simeone’s right-hand man on the pitch. The ultimate team player.

    Koke (left midfield) – 7
Although he lined up nominally on the left flank, he spent the majority of the game in the central midfield battleground and again showed he possesses more than a hint of steel to complement his silky touch on the ball.

    Diego Costa (striker) – 6
Like Turan, he was left sobbing on the sidelines after suffering a recurrence of the hamstring injury which has bothered him for weeks. Now must be a major doubt for the Champions League final next Saturday.

    David Villa (striker) – 6
Worked hard against his former club but now lacks pace and never looked like ending his two-month goal drought. His time at the top level could be drawing to a close.

    Adrian – 6
Came on for Costa and initially struggled to impose his more subtle skills on the action, but played a big part in his team’s fightback. Replaced when Simeone opted for more physicality in the latter stages.

    Raul Garcia – 7
Atletico’s Mr Versatile replaced Turan and did a typically manful job on the right flank, working hard to support Juanfran in negating Barca’s left wing threat. Also posed a danger in the box from set pieces.

    Jose Sosa – 6
The hard-working Argentine came on for the final few minutes to give an added muscular edge as Atletico protected their point, and did everything that was asked of him.

And We Can Start Believing Back in Our Capabilities without the reaction or need to be overly proud nor cocky. Just an Assured Self-Believe and Confidence.

We’ve discovered our TRUE Capabilities that ‘they’ have last been trying to bury out from Us.

Continue on Gratefulness over Heaven’s Grace and Favours and concurrently struggle in curbing that ‘reaction’ towards arrogance and excessive greed during the accumulation of further successes. We DON’T Want to turn or be Tricked into the other Party.(Believe me this could be the Next Challenge!)

GOD WILLING We’ll Achieve Respectable and Eternal Success. I’ve Already Had My Say.

  • Hi Barça fan here. I am a frequent visitor to this site, but this is my first comment here. Simeone is the special one. Atletico winning La Liga has to be the greatest achievement in modern club football. It takes some balls to win the league where Barça and Real Madrid are playing. I loved the way u ppl pressed. It’s a pleasure to witness so many games between these clubs. Good luck for the UCL final.

  • Ali

Villarreal played their last game lookalike oliver will be able to lift the league title with us as well as leo and saul!
But according to some sources they say that we will lift league title in the first game of the next season?????
    Is this true????????

  • kris

Thank you, Aquit. That means a lot. Really. Thanks for the comment. Appreciate it.

  • palestine-atletico

This is unfair to wait until next year!!!! Coz some players will leave without lifting the trophy… i want to watch the celebrations

  • Jeronamo

@ Aquit, I’ll echo the thank you that my brother kris said. Very humble and respectful of you, I enjoyed all of our meetings also because football was played each time. Not the bullshit we get from games with Real Madrid

  • Jeronamo

I can’t stand they’re fans and their cockiness…talking like they’ve already won the champions league ughhh it’s infuriating and all I’m doing is smiling and saying “we’ll see”. If we are to win I don’t even want a close game I WANT TO DESTROY THOSE FUCKERS!!!

  • Will

    Thanks Acquit!

It’s clear to me that Barcelona’s and Atleti’s fans are the best in Spain. Beautiful mosaic you did yesterday.

I think it’s a pleasure to watch the passion Atletico plays these days like the way it was to watch Barcelona coached by Guardiola. Of course Barça is a big rival but it’s a very decent one. All Barça players celebrate their goals with their fans and colleagues and Ronaldo celebrates with provocations to their rivals and showing how he is “good”. What a disgusting person.

  • Ahmad Hossainy

@Ali : tonight at 8:30 pm in Madrid time, the team is going to Neptuno to celebrate the title with the fans
I guess they will open our trophy cabinet and bring one of our nine replicas

La Liga never had trophy ceremony anyway, there is no podium and no medals like most leagues around the world
many countries that the Spanish themselves call them “third world” have much better organization than them
In EPL where in many seasons the title is decided in the last day, they bring a podium (customized one) a trophy and a set of medals to the both stadiums, just like they did this season in Anfield & Etihad, and if Chelsea were still have a chance they were ready to put a podium, a trophy & a set of medals in each of the 3 stadiums

@Acquit : you may not believe this :
my dad and my 2 brothers are Barca fans, but my dad and my older brother were wishing that Atleti win the title even before the game, they saw how hard they worked and how -won’t say bad, but not so good- Barca were
They felt that it will be unfair if Atleti lost the title
I always considered Barca fans (or most of them) tasteful and classy, while you can say the opposite about Real fans

@Jeronamo : is the madridistas acting like they already won the CL a bad thing ?!
I think it’s a good thing, it suits us very well
and it’s not just the fans, but also the team, the players, the coach and Florentino
our best weapon in Lisbon will be Real’s eagerness

Barcelona were also very sure that Liga is theirs,
I just posted a photo last night on twitter for the cover of Catalan paper “SPORT” after Real’s draw in Valladolid saying:
“El Madrid nos da La Liga” (Real Madrid gives us La Liga) !!

  • Ali

@ahmed are you sure no winner medals?

  • Ahmad Hossainy

@Ali : have you ever seen La Liga winners receiving medals ?! .. I haven’t
even in the last couple of years there are no medals for the cup winners either,
instead, they receive tiny replicas of the Cup Trophy

  • Brad

Tele Madrid Stream of the festivities today:

  • kris

Or even better the celebrations of the title is on the club website.

  • Brad

    That’s even better!

  • Ali

@ahmed no I haven’t seen but I think players will get some award or atleast something thats what I’m sure of!

  • ali_

where is koke? he wasnt on the stage

  • Brad

I don’t know, I was wondering the same thing. I thought he was on the bus when they left the Vicente Calderon :/

  • Silchas

hey he was on the bus according to his facebook picture

  • elkilo

i think koke’s pizza was bad that they eat yesterday. you can see in the link that he didn’t feel good.

  • Brad

    Pobre Koke 🙁

  • Ali

Koke was there! He was on the bus! He posted a picture on Instagram with adrian and villa!

  • Amr Misir Mukadaffi

any1 can link me the celebration link of Atletico ??

  • elkilo

But he was not at Neptuno.

He confirmed it now on his facebook page that he did not feel good and he hopes that he will see the fans at neptuno again next week 🙂

  • Jelle

Anyone who knows where I can buy the champions shirt their wearing? 😉

  • Ahmad Hossainy

“Partido a Partido” has become “Latido a Latido”
The champions shirts have a red & white heart with the slogan :
“La Historia se Escribe, Latido a Latido” (The History is Written, Beat by Beat)

I have to say, the one who comes up with the slogans on the celebration T-shirts is a genius

If anybody cares, and we all should do, in the same time the first team where celebrating in Neptuno, Atleti B were playing their first game in Segunda B relegation playoffs, and they got an important 1-0 away win against Caudal,
the second leg is in Mat 25th
it’s not just important for Atleti B to stay at Segunda B, but also for the first team, as the main goal for the B team is to produce talents for the first team, and it will be easier to bring promising youngsters to a team playing in Segunda B than a one playing in Tercera
and it would be even easier if it was playing in Segunda, but let’s avoid relegation this season then think about promotion next season

  • Brad

Jelle, I’d assume they’ll be up on the official site’s store page, but they’re not there yet.

  • Pantic#10

@ Jelle, Brad: it’s available in the store of the official website, 29,00 euro, there’s a link in the homepage

  • Pantic#10

Simeone :”No es solamente una Liga. Si se cree y se trabaja, se puede”.

This victory goes beyond football. It’s an important lesson for everyday life.
We’re all living in bad times, but this victory brought some light in our future.

  • Charles

absolutely buzzing!!!! this victory means so much to us!!! – Zimbabwe atletico fans

  • piserakos

Now that i have time and i’m more relaxed from the celebrations… I will do a little analyse
    1) Barca’s fans are the best after ours… They all shouted “Atleti, atleti” and they were giving respect to our team. Instead many of their player (included Messi) didn’t gave their respect to our players. Also if i was Barca fan i would never accept Cuenca play again to my team, we was insulted their fans. Well done to Barca i hope also next year you will finish second after Atleti of course.
    2) Gabi is our soul!
    3) As Ahmad said many times this year… Godin is our MVP of the year! Also we saw that big trophies are won from Center backs…
    4) All the world (even Barca’s fans) were with Atleti! Only the Madridistas were with Barca…
    5) Atleti B won 0-1 at the play-offs of the segunda B and probably will stay at the division.
    6) Ahmad is right La Liga is acting like a 3rd division country, they should have gave the trophy yesterday and not next year
Last but not least! Koke was drunk today! Hehe this guy is crazy

  • anshary

@Pantic#10 I’m so sad. The t-shirt is not available in the Atletico Store for Asia. Therefore it won’t deliver to my address.

Maybe i should consider migrating. 🙂

  • Ali

@anshary It is available on local stores!
I bought one from Nike store in pakistan! So I guess it’s available in Asia also. I don’t know whether it was orginal or not but I bought it!

  • i love atletico with heart and soul
