La Liga: Athletic Club 1 – 2 Atlético

Atlético earn big win away at San Mamés

Diego Costa at Athletic Bilbao

Costa scores to tie the game (AS)

Atlético Madrid have taken another huge step to the La Liga title by winning at San Mamés on Saturday night.

Against Athletic Club the Colchoneros came from behind to win 1-2, courtesy of goals by Diego Costa and Koke.

After just six minutes the home side lead when Iker Muniain chased a long pass by Mikel San José. The quick winger beat both Juanfran and Thibaut Courtois to the ball and chipped it over the goalkeeper to give his team an early lead.

Atlético should have tied a couple of minutes later, but Diego Costa’s attempt in the 13th minute was too close to Gorka Iraizoz to beat the goalkeeper 1-on-1.

A similar situation a couple minutes later was more succesful for Diego Costa. After Koke intercepted a sloppy pass by Iturraspe, our Brazilian topscorer again confronted Iraizoz and this time came out victorious by slotting the ball past the goalie with his left foot.

After half an hour of play Atleti were close to taking the lead, but Raúl García missed a huge opportunity after receiving the ball from Filipe Luís. A moment later there was excitement at the other end as Markel Susaeta headed just inches wide after Thibaut Courtois missed his interception.

The second half saw more end to end stuff as the teams were equal in both passion and offensive intent. Just thirty seconds into the second Diego Costa again found himself in a great position to score, but he shot wide with his weaker left foot. The Brazilian was unstoppable for the Athletic defence and should have earned a penalty when he was brought down by Aimeric Laporte, but the atrocious José Antonio Teixeira Vitienes waived to play on. Then, as the pace of the game didn´t allow fans or players to take a breather, Oscar De Marcos just missed the goal after robbing the ball from Diego Godín.

In the 56th minute Atlético Madrid went ahead when Koke headed in the 2-1. The young midfielder was at the end of a well worked attack by Atleti and beat his defender to a cross by Filipe.

After scoring their second, Atleti approached the game more calmly and tried to control the tempo, while Bilbao increased the pressure as the game went on. Ten minutes before the end everyone at the San Mamés jumped out of their seats to celebrate a late equalizer, but Thibaut Courtois sat them back down. The Belgian ‘keeper pulled off one of the most amazing and most important saves of the year to maintain his team’s lead.

The match was decided a few moments later when Laporte received his second yellow card for a foul on Diego Costa, which helped Atleti through the final moments of the game. The Rojiblancos held on and maintain their one point lead over Barcelona in the La Liga table. With the win over Athletic, Atlético are now twenty points ahead of the number four and only a point shy of securing a top 3 finish and Champions League spot for next season.

Any news regarding costa? Is he injured?

  • Jeronamo

Tough game, great win… now our sights are set to tuesday for our first champions league match against barca. On to the next one Aupa Atelti!!!

  • Ahmad Hossainy

Well, Teixeira Vitienes tried his best to prevent Atleti from wining, but unlike his brother, he failed
is that why Fernando is the one who called “Teixeira Vitienes I” despite being the younger ?!!

El Cholo said many times that he will not start thinking of wining the title until there are 4 or 5 games left,
for me, I’ll start now .. wining at San Mames in week 30 while Athletic are 4th on the table is a very huge step for wining the title

but I’m a little worried of Villareal though, for one reason : Gabi will not play
for me, there are only 2 players at Atleti who are irreplaceable, Courtois & Gabi
every other player has a good sub, Costa has Villa & RG8, Arda & Koke have Diego & Sosa and even Godin & Miranda have Toby
but no one can replace Gabi, not Mario and not Tiago,
in fact, Gabi alone can play better than both of them together
don’t get me wrong, Mario and Tiago are good, but Gabi is magnificent

when you are watching Villareal game next week and find yourselves asking “where is Gabi” then you will know what I’m talking about

Gabi is our unsung hero, the one that nobody talks about, the one who will never be called for La Roja
but I believe he doesn’t care about that, because he is the one who lifts the trophies

Did anyone else hear that massive thud tonight? I believe it was the heart and hopes of Barca and Real Madrid. Tonight is the night our title hope’s fall apart. Hmmmm…..maybe not.

For the rest of the season we will have to score more opening goals than normal (see betis and Granada games), deal with more cards than usual and understand that we are not the preferred option to win la liga. Every decision will go against us. But we will fight till the death. We will be better than anything put in front of us. Ref’s included. Barca and Madrid have nothing on cholo’s hombre’s.

By the way, did anyone catch the Madrid v rayo game on sky? It’s hilarious listening to them try and defend Bale. €100m for a completely average player. Sorry, average if they are playing against a poor team. His record against poor teams is very, well, average. Against good teams, he is completely lost. Here’s hoping they spend another €100m on some shite like James Milner.

  • jeronamo

Lmao.. when he scored his first goal of the game i turned the tele off. I wonder what types of praises the media will shower him with after another average display… its a good thing i watch these players for myself or else the media would make me believe he was worth every penny

  • starvs

    We can really do this.

  • farhan

    100milion for bale…(no brain included.)
    ..
rm need to pay 100milion more for brain 😀
anyway we are doing great… next game is with barca…Camp nou (helll)…

  • Kris

Lol if you didn’t notice Camp Nou is nowhere close to hell, and the fans there will actually boo your own players like Barbie got jeered at the Blehrnebow. It will be a difficult match but the fans won’t affect us there, they are nowhere close to what the San Mames fans were like today. They are all so….. Quiet.

  • Luis

COMPLETELY agree with Ahmad about Gabi

  • farhan

    @kris
nope it really turns into hell last season barca vs ac milan…. i bet when milan enters in camp nou they losses all their concentration…anyway … we are atleti…. we know how to face them
