Now that a deal for Filipe has been agreed, Atlético can focus on signing one more defender. Quique Sánchez Flores wants either a centre or a right-back, with Ujfalusi to complete the defence.
While a deal for Fanni seemed close, Atleti has set their sight on Diego Godín, the Uruguayan centre-back from Villarreal. Marca even reports Atlético has already offered the defender a contract, which would indicate that an agreement between the clubs is close.
According to the newspaper, we’ll pay a fee of somewhere in between €8m and €10m over two installments. The fee could depend on the involvement of some of our canteranos. Keko, Koke, Pulido, Cédric, Atienza, Molino and Gallegos are mentioned as possible bargaining chips.
Villarreal B is active in the Segunda División, and Fernando Roig hopes to not only reinforce the first, but also the second team of Villarreal, which is where some of our youngsters could end up. To cover the loss of Godín, Villarreal will most likely try to sign Valencia veteran Carlos Marchena for €2.5m.
Godín is currently enjoying a holiday after Uruguay’s long World Cup run, but is said to be enthusiastic about a possible move to Madrid. The defender is currently on a €600K contract which ends in 2012.
