Atlético striker Radamel Falcao, the Europa League’s most valuable player in the 2010/11 version of the competition, was invited to Monaco to take part in the UEFA tournament’s group stage draw Friday.

A day after his team-mates saw off Vitória de Guimarães with a thumping 4-0 win in Portugal, the Colombian did his new club no favours, drawing them into what could arguably be considered the group of death.

Because of their UEFA coefficient ranking, Atleti were placed in Pot I as a group head, landing in Group I after Falcao drew his club’s ball.

Joining them in the group were Udinese of Italy, Rennes of France and Sion of Switzerland.

The Swiss outfit however, might be disqualified and could be replaced by Celtic, according to AS.

The Scottish Premiere League side were eliminated by Sion yesterday, but have submitted a formal complaint to UEFA claiming their Swiss opponents illegally signed players in spite of a current two-year ban from doing so.

As the fixtures currently stand, Atlético are set to open up against Sion at the Vicente Calderón on the 15th of September.

Los Colchoneros close out the group stage against Rennes on the 15th of December, also at the Calderón.

Group I
Atlético Madrid (Spain)
Udinese (Italy)
Rennes (France)
Sion (Switzerland)

Celtic may opt instead Sion.. hard group.

Falcao better make amends with some goals then

    Ed QFT.

Group is damn hard but still we are the ones who will be feared here. We have to be ruthless on our own field and we should get enough away points ten to finish top.

At least a couple more supporters will come to the stands.

This is actually very passable. Stade Rennes is a bit dangerous, but for Atletico’s level, the only real danger seems to be Udinese.
Both Celtic and Sion should not be considered dangerous (anymore, in the Scottish case)

Second place is the least they should be able to accomplish, in my opinion.

I honestly thought we will be placed with Udinese in the group stage..

its 50-50 group. not hard. but only Udinese will be.

Typical Celtic complaining and wanting clarification for everything. I hope they do get in for a couple of reasons, 1 being it’s an easy 6 points and the second reason being that I should be able to get to an Atleti game!

I can only really see Udinese causing us any real problems. Should be fairly routine with the team we have.
