Álvaro Domínguez was one of the three big surprises in Vicente del Bosque’s selection for Spain’s upcoming games against Chile and Liechenstein.
Martín Montoya and Botía are the other new faces in the Selección, who will play a friendly against the South Americans on 2 September before their European Championship 2012 qualifier four days later.
Some weeks ago, we discussed Álvaro’s chances of making the Spain squad, and without a left-back called up by Del Bosque, there are chances the Atleti canterano and vice-captain could even start for La Roja.
Domínguez was pleasantly surprised by the news.
“I was working with the physio when we heard the news on the radio,” he said.
“I was super excited and started hugging him, before even calling my parents. I’m very happy, but this doesn’t end here. This selection is a reward for me and for all the people around me who have helped me to achieve this.”
The young defender, who will be the first Rojiblanco in the Spanish squad since Pablo Ibañez, said “it’s an honour to represent Atlético in the national team.”
Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois also received an invitation for his national team on Thursday, which brings Atleti’s total of internationals to nine.
Radamel Falcao will join Luis Perea and the rest of his comrades for Colombia’s two friendlies on American soil against Honduras and Paraguay.
Another new signing, Arda Turan, who has yet to feature for Atlético after picking up an injury in his last game for Turkey, has been called up by his country for the qualifying matches against Kazakhstan and Austria.
Argentina’s new coach Alejandro Sabella has called up Eduardo Salvio for the Albiceleste’s friendly fixtures against Venezuela and Nigeria, which are played in India and Bangladesh respectively.
Our Brazilian midfielder Elias was invited for the Seleção’s match against Ghana which is played in London on the 31st of August.
Our Uruguayan duo Diego Forlán and Diego Godín were selected for a game between the recently-crowned South American champions against Ukraine.
Our youngsters Koke and Joel have been called up by Spain U-21 for a double encounter with Georgia.
