Atlético head out to Huelva Friday to face off against Recreativo for the Trofeo Colombino.

The friendly, Atleti’s final test of the pre-season before the next round of Europa League and la Liga get underway, is scheduled to kick-off at 22:00 CET.

According to AS, Atleti coach Gregorio Manzano is expected to unveil his 4-3-3 setup and finally ditch the 4-4-2 system employed by his predecessors.

The starting midfield will be composed of Mario Suarez, who returns from injury, Tiago and Gabi.

Luis Perea will be tested out as a right-back in place of Sílvio, who returns to the squad after participating in Portugal’s friendly against Luxembourg on Wednesday.

Given that defender Juan Valera is set to leave the club soon, Manzano intends to use the Colombian as the back-up right-back this upcoming season.

Jose Antonio Reyes and Adrián will man the wings in the attack, while 18-year-old Atleti canterano Borja González will be deployed as the central striker.

Manzano will probably offer both Joel and Thibaut Courtois some time between the sticks in the clash, while Sergio Asenjo was left off the match selection.

Also not traveling to Huelva are Raul Garcia (leaving for Osasuna on loan), Fran Mérida and Diego Forlán (on vacation).

Last season’s version of this prestigious summer event was in the form of a two-game mini-tournament. Los Rojiblancos were defeated 1-0 by Sporting Gijón in the semi-final before going on to thrash Montevideo Wanderers 3-0 in the third-place match.

Hosts Recre have won the Trofeo 12 times. Atleti have taken the Colombino title on five occasions in the last 45 years since first taking part in the competition.

Atlético match selection:
Goalkeepers: Joel, Courtois
Defenders: Antonio López, Filipe Luis, Godín, Silvio, Domínguez, Perea, Miranda
Midfielders: Mario Suárez, Tiago, Elías, Assunçao, Gabi, Salvio, Reyes, Juanfran
Forwards: Adrián, Borja

Im so sorry for Fran ;(

If we do get falcao, does that mean forlan lose status as a starter ?
as there seem to be no spots for the both of them in a 4-3-3 formation.

  • Ringo Schut

Pretty good I guess, wonder how Borja will do 🙂
Nice that Manzano gives him a chance, maybe he will turn out fine after all!
The midfield is pretty defensive, though… I’d add Salvio instead of Gabi.

  • Davide

Way to defensive midfield. One the those three in the middle just has to be creative offensive player. Try this one in this game

    …………….Borja Baston………….

  • Urban

Fabs is heading to barca, I wonder if there might be a slight chance now to sing Thiago…

I read somwhere, that Porto accepted our 35 million + Salvio bid for Falcao. In this case for that amount of money I don’t want him anymore. If this rumour is true he has to score 45 goals in 35 league matches to be worth that!

  • Matthijs

Can we see the match somewhere?

  • Davide

Just came back yesterday from two day trip to Milano with my wife. I was think after talknign to alot of football crazy people over there that someone like Pazzini or Gilardino would be a good buy for much less money. Also think Giovinco would be a excellent purchase to the wings.

Agreed! Way to much money! But as the clubs money does not affect suuporters or something we will never see, i would rather see them spend that money instead of Gil buying a diamond furcoat and spend the rest on som washed up striker like Güiza.

  • starvs

Yeah def way to much but the fact they the board is going after a big name/legit talent is a good sign at least, they seem to be serious about winning…hopefully…

still need the midfield playmaker though…

  • Lubo

seems you’re right. Looking at this transfer from your angle made me clear in something. Our team should benefit from the money received and not our board members. Even though I believe that large sum should be spent in different way. As starvs said, we still need playmaking midfielder and Diego is not the solution. Hopefully Manzano is counting on Koke.
F**k it, I still believe that letting Salvio go is something we’ll defintely regret in 2 or 3 years. And what a bitter regret it will be. Elias should be offloaded instead. Yes, he’s here just 7 months, but except that one amazing free kick, he just didn’t show anything and seems he’s a player of the same quality level we already had.
Btw, looking forward for the match..

    Perea will flop on right…..
