Atlético head out to Huelva Friday to face off against Recreativo for the Trofeo Colombino.
The friendly, Atleti’s final test of the pre-season before the next round of Europa League and la Liga get underway, is scheduled to kick-off at 22:00 CET.
According to AS, Atleti coach Gregorio Manzano is expected to unveil his 4-3-3 setup and finally ditch the 4-4-2 system employed by his predecessors.
The starting midfield will be composed of Mario Suarez, who returns from injury, Tiago and Gabi.
Luis Perea will be tested out as a right-back in place of Sílvio, who returns to the squad after participating in Portugal’s friendly against Luxembourg on Wednesday.
Given that defender Juan Valera is set to leave the club soon, Manzano intends to use the Colombian as the back-up right-back this upcoming season.
Jose Antonio Reyes and Adrián will man the wings in the attack, while 18-year-old Atleti canterano Borja González will be deployed as the central striker.
Manzano will probably offer both Joel and Thibaut Courtois some time between the sticks in the clash, while Sergio Asenjo was left off the match selection.
Also not traveling to Huelva are Raul Garcia (leaving for Osasuna on loan), Fran Mérida and Diego Forlán (on vacation).
Last season’s version of this prestigious summer event was in the form of a two-game mini-tournament. Los Rojiblancos were defeated 1-0 by Sporting Gijón in the semi-final before going on to thrash Montevideo Wanderers 3-0 in the third-place match.
Hosts Recre have won the Trofeo 12 times. Atleti have taken the Colombino title on five occasions in the last 45 years since first taking part in the competition.
