After besting Norwegian side Stromsgodset 4-1 overall in the third qualifying round, Atlético will now face Vitória de Guimarães in the Europa League play-off phase, with the first leg to be played at the Vicente Calderón on the 18th of August.

If Atleti advance we will enter the group stages of the tournament we won back in May 2010.

Los Rojiblancos had the chance to draw Sochaux, Vitória, Alana Vladikavkaz, Maccabi Tel Aviv or Shamrock on Friday in Nyon.

We got the Portuguese side, which finished 5th in the Liga ZON Sagres last season. They qualified for European competition after reaching the final of the Portuguese cup, which they eventually lost to Benfica.

Gregorio Manzano was wary of our upcoming opponents.

“They are a well organised and compact team, with good technical players,” said the coach.

“It will be a complicated tie, but we are optimistic and confident that we can overcome this challenge and qualify for the group phase of the tournament.”

Sílvio, who faced Vitória in the Portuguese league last season, warned his new team mates.

“They are from the north of Portugal, where players come out with knives between their teeth.”

Spanish teams traditionally struggle in Iberian derbies, but Atleti have never been eliminated in a qualifying round.

We’re confident that, history behind our back in that we have previously won 9 out of 10 games in this round, we’ll reach the group stages.

The return leg will be played in the Estádio D. Afonso Henriques one week later, on the 25th of August.

    Doable

  • You need to rate the players buddy after each match. It would be very interesting.

Of course its doable but if we play like we just did the past two games we will be done. Vitoria plays the Portuguese supercup tomorrow, I bet after you watch that game it wont seem as doable.
We need the playmaker this week, Diego or whoever it is.

Actually they lost the cup to Porto, not Benfica by 2-6. I hope we can get through with the same score!
