Atlético Madrid have struck a sponsorship agreement with handball club Balonmano Ciudad Real.
The team will not only play their games in red and white kits and in a venue in Madrid, but the club have also been renamed Balonmano Atlético de Madrid.
After the first year, our management will re-evaluate the project and decide whether to continue sponsoring it or not.
In an official release on the club’s website, Atlético made clear that fan anticipation of the handball project will be an important factor in the decision to extend.
In order to increase attendance, Atleti season ticket holders will be given discounts and tickets to BM Atlético games.
For the older Atleti supporters among us, the return of a handball section will remind them of our club’s rich past. In the 1950s, a handball section was founded by Atlético and the team experienced a period of great success in the 80s. But, just like our football cantera, this section of the club was disbanded by Jesús Gil y Gil in 1992.
Enrique Cerezo, who in no way will have any influence on the project, had already attempted to bring back the handball team in 2006. Although not officially owned by Atleti, we are proud to once again have a handball club that will bear our name and colours.
