Atletico Madrid have signed 17 year old Montoeli Sonopo from Lioli FC after the youngster put in some impressive performances during the under 20 African Youth Championships’ qualifying campaign.
The two-time Lesotho Premier League champions confirmed on Thursday that Sonopo would be on his way to Madrid. Lioli FC president Lebohang Thotanyana was quoted as saying, “We are busy patching up the finer details of his move but we have his contract already, so it is a done deal.”
Sonopo has only played for Lioli a single season after joining from Nyenye Rovers in September 2010.
Negotiations between the two clubs have been going on for a couple of months so everyone at Atleti will be glad to see the deal finally done. All that is stopping Sonopo from joining up with his new team-mates is a visa, but that should be finalised in the next few days.
Due to his age, Sonopo won’t be immediately available for first team selection but will play a part on the wing for Atletico’s reserve side. If all develops as planned then Los Rojiblancos may have a real talent on their hands. Watch this space.
