David de Gea has officially joined Manchester United after agreeing a five-year contract with the English champions.

Atlético Madrid and United announced the deal simultaneously on their official websites. The Premier League side are reported to have paid €20 million for our young Spanish goalkeeper.

De Gea passed a medical in Manchester this week and moves to England just a week after winning the European U21 Championships with Spain.

Talking to Manchester United’s in-house television station MUTV, De Gea said: “I feel very proud and I can’t wait to start playing here. When a club the size of Manchester United comes in for you it obviously makes you very, very happy.

“It’s a great privilege to be part of a club like United and I’m keen to do my best and show what I can do.”

De Gea enjoyed 18 months as starting goalkeeper for Atleti. His departure is the first big-name exit from the Vicente Calderón this summer. It almost certainly won’t be the last, with Sergio Agüero stating his desire to leave and the future of Diego Forlán still up in the air.

De Gea will hold a farewell press conference today at the Vicente Calderón at 17:00.

We’re all depressed here at AtleticoFans. It was always looking likely but now it’s official. Will we see Atleti announce another signing to cushion the blow?

I understand him. He’ll be one of the greatest. Soon to kick Casillas out of the Spanish squad!
    Good luck David!

  • Sash

Very sad to see him go, but all the luck to David. Atletico fans will be proud when he becomes the worlds best keeper!

  • Ian

I really hoped he will be our Casillas, it’s sad to see him go.
Now we can just hope that Joel will be our Casillas or Asenjo to step up.

we will sure suffer at the defence, de gea had helped us alot. if it werent for him, we would have lost all games. lool

  • Scott Lind

Joined one of my favorite clubs from my favorite club. Wish him the best at Manchester United! And yes he’ll be the best keeper in some years!
Hopes Asenjo can take over from De Gea..

If Atleti take all this money from the sale of a player who is poised to become possibly the best player at his position in the entire world and uses it to buy a mediocre striker in Osvaldo….it’d be typical.

    Well said!

    Good luck to David!
He had a great last season with us and it was also due to him that we could lift 2 trophies in 2010!

David is a natural born penalty killer.
People over there in England will love him for that reason alone… 😉

  • Ringo

Osvaldo would be nice as an extra striker, he should only be bought if there’s a lot of money, but there’s a debt, so every penny should mean something. Better raise the bid for Piatti, if it’s not too late already.

Best of luck to David 😉

Good luck De Gea. But you aint all that and a bag of chips. We will replace you with a better keeper :). Enjoy the rain in Manchester.

I’m pretty annoyed with De Geas speech. He didn’t need to say that United is this and that at a farewell speech. He already decided to leave and everybody knows he signed a contract with United, so he should just have focused on Atlético and it’s supporters. Don’t say United is big and this and that at a farewell press conference. Somehow he made Atlético look like a small farmers market club and himself into a ignorant high society nimrod just beacuase he went to United. Also it’s pretty disrespectful to leave át such a early age and after just 18 months in the first team from the club who spent time, money, love and effort for 10 years into groming him for first team duties. As a youth product of our academy he should have seen another 2-3 seasons through before leaving. Now he a just acting like high society hooker. I wish him luck but lost all respect for him.

I cant blame DeGea, he is getting more money and will be playing for all the marbles every year. His career just leaped frogged several years. He would eventually get there with Atleti, but not now.
I cant say the same for Kun. Kun said it was not about the money it was about playing for a team that will always compete for championships. Certainly its not about the money because Atleti offered to raise him to 9m per year, and Juve is paying him 6,5. AND its certainly not about playing for championships because Juve is not playing for anything. So what is this kid doing???
