According to several reports in the Spanish press, Atletico are very close to agreeing terms with Sporting Braga for defender Sílvio.

Portuguese paper Récord broke the news early Wednesday, claiming the 23-year-old’s sale to Atleti is imminent.

A product of the Benfica youth system, Sílvio joined Braga in 2010 from Portuguese first division side Rio Ave. He is a natural right back who can also play on the left flank.

AS reports that Atlético sporting director Jesus Garcia Pitarch, who was in Portugal on 14 April to catch Braga’s Europa League encounter versus Dynamo Kiev, will be in Lisbon on Thursday to watch Braga face off against Benfica in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final.

The Portuguese media suggest that a deal could even be reached for the full back on Thursday, so long as Cerezo and Gil Marín agree to the terms negotiated by Pitarch with Braga president Antonio Salvador. AS estimates that we could lock up the Portugal international for a price around €4m.

If we manage to snag Sílvio, he will be our third signing for next season, joining central defender Miranda (Sao Paulo) and striker Adrián (Deportivo).

The Lisbon-born back would likely compete with Tomas Ujfalusi for a starting job next season, and would be the Czech’s ultimate replacement, though he could also serve as a back-up to Filipe Luis on the left.

This report will come as bad news to those hoping that Juan Valera would be assuming Atleti’s future right-back role.

How would you feel about this signing?

Adrian’s a done deal? I hope they’re not paying much for that, because he doesn’t seem much of a goal-scorer. I don’t know much about Silvio, but he is a Portuguese international, I believe. So if the price ain’t too high, it’s a nice transfer, I think.

Has Valera been sold (or given away) or hasn’t he yet?

  • Derek Maaijen

The Adrián transfer seems to be all but officially confirmed, he would come in on a free transfer.

I don’t know him but we need to strength the squad in defence if we want to make greater things next year.

Ujfalusi is getting older , so Silvio will have the time to show us his capability.

I think this signing looks good. From what I saw, he looks better than Valera and Ujfalusi together. And I wanted to ask you, whether there is any truth in rumour that we have been in talks with Paulo Henrique “Ganso” from Santos. Or Fiorentina’s playmaker Riccardo Montolivo. Any of them would fit well I think.

I know nothin gabout Silvio, but RB is our biggest need so nice to know they are looking for some.

I have heard absolutely about this Adrian deal. Do we need an additional striker? Figure this is just for a back-up/reinforement role, does this mean Borja isn’t going to get a chance?

  • urban

Borja, fran and pulido should get loaned out

  • palc

4 million doesnt sound that bad. He’s probably better than Ujfa and Valera.

If Adrian is a sure thing. What will happen to the Diegos?
And Miranda? we dont need him. We have the Dominator.

Any word on Salvio? I think he will stay for another season on loan..

  • Gert

Did anyone see Braga yesterday? Did he play (well)?

  • Derek Maaijen

I saw some extended highlights Gert. He did well, but Benfica dominated the entire match and had lots of chances. Interesting to note is that Sílvio played as a left back in this game.

Is he better than César Azpilicueta?
