According to several reports in the Spanish press, Atletico are very close to agreeing terms with Sporting Braga for defender Sílvio.
Portuguese paper Récord broke the news early Wednesday, claiming the 23-year-old’s sale to Atleti is imminent.
A product of the Benfica youth system, Sílvio joined Braga in 2010 from Portuguese first division side Rio Ave. He is a natural right back who can also play on the left flank.
AS reports that Atlético sporting director Jesus Garcia Pitarch, who was in Portugal on 14 April to catch Braga’s Europa League encounter versus Dynamo Kiev, will be in Lisbon on Thursday to watch Braga face off against Benfica in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final.
The Portuguese media suggest that a deal could even be reached for the full back on Thursday, so long as Cerezo and Gil Marín agree to the terms negotiated by Pitarch with Braga president Antonio Salvador. AS estimates that we could lock up the Portugal international for a price around €4m.
If we manage to snag Sílvio, he will be our third signing for next season, joining central defender Miranda (Sao Paulo) and striker Adrián (Deportivo).
The Lisbon-born back would likely compete with Tomas Ujfalusi for a starting job next season, and would be the Czech’s ultimate replacement, though he could also serve as a back-up to Filipe Luis on the left.
This report will come as bad news to those hoping that Juan Valera would be assuming Atleti’s future right-back role.
How would you feel about this signing?
