Last week we stressed our concerns regarding a shortage of talent in Atleti youth ranks, but the performances of Atlético’s Alevín A indicate that a new, strong generation is coming through.
The Alevín A is the youth team at Atlético Madrid for players up to the age of 12.
Last week the 12th edition of the Mediterranean International Cup (MIC) was held in Barcelona, one of the most prestigious youth club tournaments in the world.
Atlético won in the category for players born after 1 January 1999, after beating an elite English selection, the Aspire football school, Manchester United and Barcelona in the final stages. The final against Barça was won 2-0, with goals by Salomón Obama and Álvaro Juan.
With the victory the Alevín A retained the title, after winning the MIC last season. Salomón was Atleti’s star player last year, finishing as the topscorer of the tournament. The youngster is even allowed to feature in the same age group again next year.
It’s always difficult to project the future of kids who are yet to hit puberty, but players like Messi, Fernando Torres and Koke too all showcased their talent at a very young age.
Some weeks ago our Alevín A also won a famous international tournament in Burriana.
