Atlético Madrid B’s streak of four consecutive wins was ended by Deportivo B on the weekend. Atlético will hope this isn’t a foreshadowing of this Sunday’s clash between the two first teams at the Riazor.
Antonio Rivas had to make some changes to his side, with Alberto Noguera and Borja called up the senior squad by Quique Sánchez Flores, while Andrés Muñoz, Quique and Miramón are injured. Striker Jarjú is currently away with Gambia at the U20 Africa Cup.
Atleti B felt the absences, especially up front, as topscorer José Collado went without any service for most of the match. Rivas ended up with three different attacking midfielders than he started with, but none were able to make a difference.
Deportivo B were the superior side in the first half, while after the break Atleti dictated most of the play. The home side went on the offensive in the last ten minutes, which eventually led to the first and final goal of the match.
Atleti seemed to escape when a Depor goal was wrongly flagged offside, but just before the end Luis Ángel finished off a good attack with a diagonal volley from the left side. In added time Iago prevented Atlético from an even bigger loss when he made an excellent save after a quick Deportivo break.
Next weekend the B-team will have a day off, because opponent Cerro Reyes is no longer active in the league, giving us an automatic 2-0 victory.
The boys do play a friendly this afternoon against a selection of regional players from Morocco to open the new stadium in Tangier.
Line-up: Iago, César, Atienza, Pulido, Cantero; Joseph, Sergio Marcos; Hermosa (“75 Ndoye), Batres (“46 Perea), Mínguez (“58 Saúl); and Collado.
Goals: 1-0 Luis Ángel (“87)
