An MRI scan performed on Koke Monday morning revealed the midfielder sustained a left knee sprain on Sunday against Espanyol, as opposed to a contusion as was initially reported.
Atlético’s official site states: “[Koke] suffered an MCL sprain on his left knee.”
As if Osvaldo hadn’t done enough damage against us yesterday, the blow to our rising star’s knee came about from a reckless challenge by the Argentine striker, as he tried to block an acrobatic shot attempt by Koke.
The 19-year-old cantera product will miss out on our upcoming match against Levante, and will hope to be fit in time for our trip to Coruña in two weeks.
Salvio successfully operated on in Madrid
In other medical news, Atleti’s official site reports Eduardo Salvio’s foot surgery was successfully performed at the Fremap Clinic in Madrid early Monday.
The 20-year-old, who fractured the fifth metatarsal of his right foot (Jones fracture) in a Europa League clash with Benfica last Thursday, is expected to be sidelined for two to three months while in recovery.
“I hope my recovery goes well and I can return to the playing field as soon as possible,” Salvio told the official site. “It’s a disgrace that the season is now over for me, and I can only think about being in optimal conditions for when preseason training arrives.”
It’s unclear whether Benfica, who had taken Salvio on a one-year loan, will still be interested in exercising their €15m option to buy the former Lanús man come season’s end.
