Atlético Madrid B have continued its excellent winning streak and have now scored 12 goals in the last four matches, while conceding only three. On Sunday Pontevedra was the fourth consecutive victim of the B-team machine which is gaining speed towards the end of the season.
We fought against relegation the entire season but Atlético B really picked themselves up in the last months and now sit in a well deserved 9th position in the league table.
Yesterday’s victory against Pontevedra was somewhat expected, but we nearly gave away the three points after the visitors equalised late on. In the 86th minute Aitor put the teams level when he scored from a corner kick. He found the ball before his feet and scored, with what was Pontevedra’s only shot on target in the entire match.
But in the final play of the game José Hermosa brought justice and made sure all points were kept in Madrid. He scored deep into added time with a diagonal shot after a quick counter-attack from Atleti.
Our reserves had started the match strongly and created a good chance early on, but Batres’ header went inches wide of the post. The delivery came from Hermosa, who along with Alberto Noguera was the best player on the pitch.
For the remainder of the first half Pontevedra saw more of the ball while Atlético struggled to connect with striker Borja. Just before the break we launched a new offensive, with Hermosa again as the protagonist. First he forced Orlando to an excellent save with a powerful shot, before delivering a great cross which his teammates failed to reach to.
In the second half most of the chances were still for Atleti and in the 64th minute we finally managed to convert one into the first goal of the match. A rebound fell before the feet of Roberto Batres and the forward struck it into the net with a powerful and accurate strike.
Substitute striker José Collado had a big opportunity to double the lead but when he came face to face with Orlando he hit the ball over the crossbar.
Pontevedra thought they had managed to salvage a point with their goal in the 85th minute, but were stunned by Hermosa’s goal almost ten minutes later. At that point the visiting team had just 8 players on the pitch because Yahvé, Dani Pendín and Sergio Castaño were all sent off with straight red cards in the final minutes of the match.
The defeat pushes Pontevedra further into the relegation zone while Atlético B are now eight points clear of the drop with just four matches left to play.
