On Wednesday, Mundo Deportivo reported Atlético have secured the future signing of Almería forward Pablo Piatti.

The deal for the speedy Argentine, valued at approximately €10m, will be officially announced shortly after the end of this season.

The 22-year-old plays primarily as a left-winger for los Almerienses, who are currently last place in la Liga, but he can also operate as a striker. Piatti carries an Italian passport and would not count towards our non-EU quota, despite having been born in Argentina.

The tiny attacker is the most expensive signing in Almería’s history, having arrived at the club from Argentine first division squad Estudiantes de la Plata in 2008 for an €8m fee.

Piatti has featured in 66 matches for his current side, having scored 19 goals in his three seasons there. He has been the source of much misery amongst Atleti supporters because of his knack for scoring goals against us. He has found the back of the net on four occasions the last three times he has faced off against Atlético.

It is said that Rojiblanco officials began negotiations for Piatti back in late October when Almería visited the Calderón. That clash ended in a 2-2 draw, with one goal coming from the attacker.

Atleti also considered signing him during the winter transfer window to replace Simao on the left flank, but went with Osasuna’s right-winger Juanfran instead.

What are your thoughts on this potential signing? Is he a good fit for us? Is he too expensive? Let us know what you think!

  • Derek Maaijen

He seems very versatile, which is definitely an advantage. I keep thinking we might have been able to get him for even less if we waited for Almería to go down, but I guess Almería wouldn’t have accepted lower offers considering the amount they paid for Piatti.

  • Robel

I think Piatti would be a brilliant signing. Let’s now hope Salvio will be at the club next season and there’s no need for us to sign Arda!

  • Christian

Piatti would be Fantastic for us..

  • Ian

    piatti over turan!!
    keep salvio too of course..

  • Not sure about him. Reminds me too much to Sinama’s situation: outstanding player in a smaller team, failure in Atlético. And Sinama made much better seasons before signing with Atleti than Piatti.

  • Ringo Schut

Passport wise Piatti is the better signing, but I don’t think he’s better than Turan.
But, he’s only 22 years old, probably cheaper and the earlier mentioned non-EU passport is not a problem 🙂

    So: sign the fella!
I’d like to see Salvio stay as well, but even though Benfica aren’t so great at paying, even though it’s “just” 15 million.
It’s probably the next question of preferance: Costa or Salvio? The same question as 8 months ago

  • Sounds good:)

  • 7th

great, looking forward to see him play with us

    really goood attacking trio.

    hope forlan stays.

10 mil doesn’t seem like much to me really. We are only paying 2 more than Almeria paid initially and he has had some pretty good seasons in La Liga. Plus a few more less than Jurado was sold for and he seems better than him no?

I’m excited that he is coming from La Liga and should not have to adapt much.

Plus, he obviosly already comfortbale playing in the Calderon…

As 7th said, Piatti-Kun-Reyes would be a serious threat, looking forward to hopefully seeing that next year hopefully.

I always liked him, even we he scored against us-bastard
Fast, agile, smart. Good fit with Kun . If this deal is true, juanfran has to go
