On Wednesday, Mundo Deportivo reported Atlético have secured the future signing of Almería forward Pablo Piatti.
The deal for the speedy Argentine, valued at approximately €10m, will be officially announced shortly after the end of this season.
The 22-year-old plays primarily as a left-winger for los Almerienses, who are currently last place in la Liga, but he can also operate as a striker. Piatti carries an Italian passport and would not count towards our non-EU quota, despite having been born in Argentina.
The tiny attacker is the most expensive signing in Almería’s history, having arrived at the club from Argentine first division squad Estudiantes de la Plata in 2008 for an €8m fee.
Piatti has featured in 66 matches for his current side, having scored 19 goals in his three seasons there. He has been the source of much misery amongst Atleti supporters because of his knack for scoring goals against us. He has found the back of the net on four occasions the last three times he has faced off against Atlético.
It is said that Rojiblanco officials began negotiations for Piatti back in late October when Almería visited the Calderón. That clash ended in a 2-2 draw, with one goal coming from the attacker.
Atleti also considered signing him during the winter transfer window to replace Simao on the left flank, but went with Osasuna’s right-winger Juanfran instead.
What are your thoughts on this potential signing? Is he a good fit for us? Is he too expensive? Let us know what you think!
