Olympique Marseille’s left-back Taye Taiwo has decided against renewing his contract with the Ligue 1 side, according to a French newspaper.
The Nigerian’s current contract is due to expire in 2011 and he has chosen not to remain in France.
The decision bodes well for Atlético, who have reportedly made the left-back a top transfer target following the difficulties in the pursuit of Luis Filipe from Deportivo.
Los Rojiblancos have already had a €5million bid for the 25 year-old turned down, with the French outfit looking for at least €10m before Taiwo is allowed to leave the Stade Vélodrome.
Marca is reporting that Taiwo likes the prospect of a move to Atléti and the Spanish capital.
Atlético are now in a better bargaining position. With Taiwo’s contract expiring next summer, the defender leaving on a free transfer is a real possibility, and Marseille could lower their valuation and look to cash in this summer instead.
