Spectacular performances by Agüero and De Gea not enough for 3 points

Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Kun Aguero scored a brace against UD Almeria

Atlético Madrid’s search for an away win at Almería continued on Saturday evening as they came away with a 2-2 draw, despite taking the lead twice through Sergio Agüero.

Los Colchoneros have now failed to win any of their four visits to the Estadio de los Juegos Mediterráneos.

Although the team put in a good shift in the second half, it was because of two players that we took a point in Andalusia. In the first half David de Gea kept us in the match with three amazing saves while Sergio Agüero took care of the goalscoring at the other end.

The home team started the match aggressively and pressured Atlético all over the pitch. During the entire first half we struggled to keep possession. Almería exposed us on the wings where Feghouli and Crusat caused us trouble all night long and it was the latter who had the first chance of the match. After a nice run from Feghouli on the right, the ball fell to Crusat’s feet but David de Gea did brilliant to keep the winger out. Right back Míchel then got the chance to score but he blew the rebound wide of Atlético’s goal.

After twenty minutes De Gea again had to react to an attempt from Crusat, who struck a volley towards the top-corner, but De Gea kept it out with a fantastic reflex save. His stop in the 33rd minute was even more impressive, after Ulloa seemed sure to put the ball into the back of the net from only six yards out.

But just before half time, against the run of play, Atlético took the lead. Diego Forlán won the ball from Crusat in midfield, and Tiago put Agüero through on goal with a brilliant lobbed pass. The Argentine followed the flight of the ball past Diego Alves before slamming it into the roof of the net.

After the break Almería continued where they had left off and soon got the equaliser they deserved. Atlético failed to clear the ball and Perea headed it straight into Crusat’s path, who volleyed it home brilliantly with his right foot.

From that moment on the match was very much end to end, with both sides looking to get all three points. Atleti came close to reclaiming the lead, but Diego Godín hit the post after Agüero brilliantly squared the ball for the centre-back.

Not long later the Argentine himself put Atlético ahead for the second time tonight. Forlán again won the ball in midfield and delivered it to Kun, who dribbled inside the box, faked a shot and then slotted it past Alves with his left foot.

Almería weren’t going to give up and bounced back in the 77th minute, when Henok Goitom tied the match for the second time. The substitute headed the ball past De Gea after an excellent cross from Ortiz Bernal. Ortiz almost came close to scoring himself shortly after when Ulloa found him inside the box, but he shot straight at our goalkeeper.

Goitom got another chance to try his luck but the remaining ten minutes of the match were all about Atleti. First Tiago headed just over the bar, before Agüero missed an incredible opportunity to complete his hat-trick. Tiago again found Kun with a lobbed throughball, but Agüero’s nonchalant finish with the outside of his boot trinkled past the wrong side of the post.

In the dying seconds of the game Diego Alves saved a point for his team when he kept out a magnificent shot by Reyes. The match finished 2-2, although either team could easily have won tonight.

Line-up: De Gea; Ujfalusi, Perea, Godín, Filipe; Reyes, Mario, Tiago, Elias (“62 Koke); Forlán and Agüero.

Goals: 0-1 Agüero (“39); 1-1 Crusat (“49); 1-2 Agüero (“61); 2-2 Goitom (“77)

  • The second goal by Almería was really redundant and unecessary…sometimes the defenders just can’t handle it! But still a draw, could and SHOULD have been a victory for Rojiblancos! But well played, especially Agüero!.

that second goal was Filipe’s fault. Stupid as he is he just looks at the ball and wait for the player to cross. And this has happened many times before..

  • Ringo Schut

Filipe was anticipating a dribbling move, if he jumped immediately in front of the player, he could’ve easily gone past him, into the space on the right.
It’s hard to expect that Goitom had all that space and would be found so easily.

  • Mert

give Almeria credit; they defended very impressively

  • Sergio Lopez

Another awful game for us. Without Aguero & Reyes in the attack & De Gea as the ‘keeper we would lose to any professional team in the world. Forlan made several nice passes, but his ball loses in the second half were absolutely shocking…

@Ringo. Filipe should at least stressed the player, if he had done that, the cross wouldn’t be so perfect.. Maybe Filipe was afraid to tackle him because of his earlier booking? But that doesn’t explain why he does that every single game.

I knew that we were in big trouble when the Almeria player got in that position while Filipe was tracking backwards.

I liked what I saw out of Elias, he was used as a pivot a lot just one touch passing it back. He also has some good vision on the long pass, although his execution was lacking at times. He also made some good tackles in the midfield.
