Tomorrow Atlético starts preparing for the European Supercup, to be played in Monaco on 27 August. Quique Sánchez Flores has prepared his schedule and will start testing the fitness of his 26 players. Among those 26 are some new faces. Diego Costa and Mario Suárez returned to Atlético this summer, while Fran Mérida will wear the (training) shirt of his favorite club for the first time in his career.
Last season Atlético made use of the talent coming through the cantera, and Sánchez Flores will give some Atlético B players the chance to prove themselves again in preseason. Jorge Pulido, Paco Regalón, Koke, Rubén Pérez, Keko and Gallegos have been selected, as well as new signing Iago Herrerín. It’s expected some of these canteranos will stay on with the first team, while others might go out on loan.
Sergio Asenjo and Borja are still recovering from their knee ligament injuries and won’t join the team until the end of this year. It’s unknown when World Cup players Simão, Agüero and Forlán will join the team, with the latter still being active in South Africa with Uruguay.
