Last season a lone goal by Manu del Moral decided the lesser of the Madrid derbies in Getafe’s favour. Tonight, the match was heading in the same direction as Manu opened up the scoring early, but a late strike by Elias salvaged a crucial point for Atlético.
Before this evening’s kickoff had well and truly started the ball was already in the back of the net. Cata Díaz had sent Miku forward with a long ball and the Venezualan reached the goal line. From there he laid it back for Manu del Moral who was allowed all the time in the world to shoot, although he was fortunate with his finish as his shot took a deflection off Diego Godín and landed in the back of the net (1-0).
The former Rojiblanco was a hazard for Atlético’s defence all night long. He seemed keen on proving himself, which comes as no surprise after he recently spoke of his desire to one day return to the club where he came through the ranks. In the 26th minute Manu blasted a shot just wide and ten minutes later he forced David de Gea to a save after his dipping header almost went in.
Getafe created another big opportunity to double their lead in the first half when Miku crossed from the right, but Gavilán hit the crossbar from a tight angle.
While Getafe were dangerous with their quick counter attacks, Atleti didn’t get anywhere near Jordi Codina’s goal and failed to record a single serious shot on target in the first half. Diego Forlán twice received a promising through ball but was wrongly flagged offsides on both occasions. And early on Raúl García sliced open Getafe’s defence but Agüero’s first touch let him down.
The first half was slowed down by many fouls and offside calls, but it was more eventful than the second one. The home team were more than decent in midfield and defence, while Atlético were unable to weave through Getafe’s backline. When Atlético tied the match late on, it came as a complete surprise.
Diego Forlán once again took on the role of supplier as he crossed a ball into the box, much like he did in his assist against Sevilla. Substitute Elias popped up to score his first ever goal for Atlético. The Brazilian had come on for Koke and earned Atleti a point as he cleverly headed the ball over Getafe goalkeeper Codina.
Getafe almost immediately struck back after a quick attack down the left side, but David de Gea pulled off an amazing save when Dani Parejo’s header seemed certain to go in.
It was vital not to lose to Getafe who, sadly, are our direct rivals, but today’s draw won’t help either side much in the battle for the European places.
