Atlético has signed Iago Herrerín Buisán on a free transfer. The goalkeeper will join Atlético B now that Joel has joined the first team. The duo together form David de Gea’s understudies, since Sergio Asenjo has been ruled out until December. Iago explains the multitude of goalkeeping talents was actually a reason for him to join.
“I had various offers, but my decision was an easy one. I wanted a change of scenery and Atlético was a great option. I like the way this club takes care of their young talents.
“De Gea, Asenjo and Joel are players of similar age and they praised the way this club treats their youngsters.”
Iago has been selected by Quique Sánchez Flores to train with the first team during preseason, after which he’ll join Atlético B.
“It was a surprise I didn’t expect. It’s a great opportunity for me. I haven’t met my new teammates yet, so I can’t wait for training to begin. I’m very excited by this new challenge.” the young goalkeeper told Atlético’s official website.
Herrerín joins as a free agent from Athletic de Bilbao, where he was the third goalkeeper, but the youth team’s first choice. At 22 years old, he’ll be one of Atlético B’s veterans.
“I’m used to being one of the more experienced players. I know I can carry the team and help the group. It will be difficult to repeat last season’s success, but we shouldn’t limit ourselves.”
During his first few hours as a Rojiblanco, Iago met José María Amorrortu and Jesús García Pítarch.
“I hadn’t met them yet. They were very supportive and wished me luck. Now it’s up to me to show my qualities and return the confidence they have shown in me.”
