Atlético Madrid B had won their last five home games and were unbeaten at the Cerro de Espino since September, but Lugo ended our excellent streak. The league leaders took the three points in a match where Atlético B deserved more (1-2).
With first team players Raúl García, Mario Suárez, Tiago, Filipe, Koke, Joel, Pulido and Rubén Pérez all in the stands our reserves dominated most of the match, but saw how Lugo were more prolific.
The visitors didn’t create many opportunities all match long, but did strike early. After just three minutes Lugo took the lead when Yago lobbed goalkeeper Iago, who had rushed out of his goal to stop the striker.
The leaders were comfortable letting Atlético have the ball and sat back. After half an hour Collado and Mínguez finally managed to unlock their defence, but the winger’s shot went wide of goal.
But shortly after Atleti did manage to beat Javier Pita. Alberto Perea delivered a cross for José Collado and Atlético B’s topscorer headed it past the goalkeeper. A minute later Lugo almost immediately struck back, but Iago saved Azkorra’s shot.
It was that same Azkorra who decided the match in the second half. His goal was controversial, because a minute earlier José Collado had a goal disallowed for alleged offside.
The Rojiblancos went looking for the equaliser, but attempts by Sergio Marcos and Fer weren’t powerful enough to level the score. At the other end Arroyo almost decided the match when his shot smashed against the post.
The goals at the start of either half proved too much for Atlético B, who have now lost two consecutive matches after a succesful run of eight games has come to and end.
