Atlético Madrid have unveiled their newest signing today, as Elias was officially presented to the media and fans at the Vicente Calderon.
The Brazilian midfielder signs from Corinthians for a fee of around €7 million. He was shown off in Atleti’s usual fashion, in the VIP room alongside club president Enrique Cerezo.
“My team-mates at Corinthians spoke very well about this club,” Elias said.
“Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos told me good things about Atlético. I always wanted to play for a Spanish team and Atletico is a great European club.”
The 25-year-old was handed the number nine shirt by Cerezo, just four months after it was vacated by Jurado on his way to Schalke 04.
Cerezo was clearly delighted with the new signing.
“Elias fits the profile that Atlético de Madrid looks for in its professionals. Young, with quality and a great work ethic. His life is an example of a person that had to overcome obstacles to achieve his dream: to become a professional footballer,” he told the press. “With faith, he has achieved it.”
“Elias has the quality that international footballers of his country all have that make them coveted by the biggest clubs of the old continent.”
Elias seemed just as excited. He also made clear that his preferred position was central midfield.
“I hope to help the team out a lot and to achieve Atlético’s target of playing in the Champions League. I hope to play here for a long time and make history at this club,” the Brazilian said.
“I’ve been surprised by the support from all of my team-mates. The reception from them has been a very good one.”
Elias has already done his best to earn the affections of the Atlético fans, posing with an ‘Antimadridista’ scarf on the pitch of the Calderon, in front of around 50 supporters. Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos might not be so keen to talk to him now…
The fans might have to wait a while to see our new midfielder take to the pitch competitively though.
“I’m not at 100%, I’m at 60 or 70%. I’m getting in shape so that I can play. If the coach calls on me, I will play.”
