Atlético agree terms with Juanfran

Club officials are locked in talks with Osasuna

Juanfran to join Atlético?

Atlético have reportedly agreed terms with Juanfran, and the deal for the Osasuna winger now hinges on an agreement between the two clubs.

AS reports that the deal is imminent, and that Atleti will pay los Rojillos roughly €5m for Simao’s replacement. The Pamplonan outfit had rejected our first bid of about €3m, but the €5m price tag may still be reduced with the inclusion of one of our players in the negotiations.

If completed, the signing will round out the winter additions to the Colchonero squad after Brazilian midfielder Elias was brought in from Corinthians.

Outgoing deals are still in the works however, with Sergio Asenjo, Ignacio Camacho and Juanito all said to be close to following Simao out the door.

Juanfran came up through the Real Madrid youth system and made 6 appearances for the senior club. He then spent a year on loan with Espanyol, making 30 appearances, before being transferred to Osasuna on a freebie in the summer of 2006.

The 25-year old is a regular fixture in José Antonio Camacho’s side, having started all 16 domestic league matches of the current campaign.

How would you feel about this signing? Do you think Juanfran would be an upgrade over Simao?

  • I don’t know. Although he is spanish and relatively young I don’t see him as better player than Simo, even when Simo isn’t at his best. Or am I wrong? Piatti should have been a much more exciting option, but maybe Juanfran can impress even more in a better team than Osasuna?

Juanfran’s arrival would mean Reyes is shifted to the left wing, I wonder how that will influence his performances.

I see Juanfran as a stop-gap solution. He’s a good option to have on the bench, but I hope that we’ll sign a better player in the summer.

  • Buy Osasuna’s players if you want to get Osasuna’s results. EOT.

We’ve sold Simao and Jurado to only bring in Juanfran?

  • Flo

Urban I like your post 😀 But I still hope that he can fit in our team and prosper. Like I hope with every new player. But I’m concerned if this was a right decision…

  • Sergio Lopez

Even taking into consideration Simão’s recent performances he wasn’t consistent thoughout the season, even being an excellent skipper. His free-kicks veried from very bad to stunning, so did his displays. From wage-quality-age point of view Juanfran is better, but from the point of view of experience, leadership skills and connections with the players Sabrosa was times better. Let’s see, but I’m still sure we need NOT buy any more new players to play in 2 competitions – and to finish in the top 4. It would have been better to re-call Sergio Keko and loan out Jorge Koke.

  • Ringo Schut

    That might’ve been a better option, Sergio…
But it looks like it’s too late.

I’d rather had them fighting more for Piatti, he looked like an improvement, Juanfran is just to have another winger and he might be cheaper.

    Bad board, BAD!

Just remember, we are not real or barca.
We cant get ideal players, we can just get the best that our budget allows.

ahhh barca and real, damn you both to hell you annoying bastards 🙂

I don’t see Juanfran as an improvement. I hope I’m wrong. I really do.

  • NiñoTorres

Juanfran will always be a legend in my book for THAT goal against Real Madrid a couple of seasons ago, one of the best volleys I have ever seen 😀

Whether he is good enough for Atleti is another question. If we do sign him I won’t be too disappointed, but I hope we find a long term solution for the left-wing position in the summer.

  • Mert

i gotta agree with Palc’s comment above here. Simão and Jurado both departing meant to me that we should get some true difference makers in the january window, and i hope i’m not being too pessimistic but i don’t quite think juanfran and Elias are enough to put us ahead of any of the other teams fighting for those bottom two champions league spots
